You only sell it once, so good on you for resisting offers that look to be too low given the rarity and condition of the car.

Hope you can get what you want for it using other channels if you are still looking to sell.

I think to achieve a better price, deservedly, it needs better exposure and build up pre sale, but also it needed to be in a better sale environment altogether.

Its nice to think that it's the kind of car that could be the star of the show, the crem de la crem, but that also means that it is likely above most of the attendants budget too.

If it was included in something like a Classic Italian Bonhams Event, it might not be the bell of the ball, but the clients and purchasers there can easily afford it, and i suspect bid higher for that "little cute Sud" as a runaround for the Monaco apartment!

Cynical maybe, but i was surprised at the appearance and location of the Anglia Car Auction when i dropped the Sud off there, and i had a feeling it might not be the best place to achieve the top price.

Yes your probably right shrew, but the costs to have a car in bonhams auction or the like would be pretty heavy i think. Anglia classic cars charge 5% +VAT which i think is fair. Id probably need to get 12k + for it to get the same kind of money in my pocket.

Iv had a phone call today so watch this space

Yes its all relative eh Colin, got to be worthwhile after all the figures taken into consideration for sure.

it got to £9,400 at auction. The bidder offered a higher price after the auction ended but still not enough!

I'm very surprised that it didn't sell as it looks mint.
Maybe just a case of not enough alfasud enthusiast s there.
Definitely no point giving it away either.
What's your plans next try a different auction house or wait until a big alfa show comes up nd take it there.
I would try one of the big Italian car shows this year .

Anglia classic car auction has a good reputation, lots of cars go through there and make good money. The bidder on mine was by phone so he bid blind with just an appraisal. Anyone interested in alfasuds would have seen it am sure, we all did didnt we?

I just dont think prices arnt quite what people think theyr getting to, it would have been nice for it to make 12-14k but remember this is a restored sud, thats had a colour change, not an original low milage one, there always the ones that are going to make the best money.

there are loads of dealers who go along to the KL auctions who would buy it to retail it out at around £13k i'd guess, meaning they'd have to buy for under £10k to make it worth their while

very few private punters with over £10k to spare, even less that are looking for a sud I guess

and as you say col, top prices are reserved for a "correct" car as original is always top dog.

difficult choice as to whether to let go, only you know the answer to that one mate

I think Anglia Car Auctions classic auctions get some pretty good prices, provided the right buyers are there which means doing a bit of extra promotion to get the word out. I've seen some bargains go through and also some that you wonder what people see that makes them want to spend so much - just depends what you like and how desperate you are to get it.

I see entries for the next auction are starting to build - quite a nice Marcos has been entered - always quite fancied one of those. No Alfas as yet

Sounds crazy doesn't it? but at the same auction a peugeot 205 gti went for 25k, a 2.8i capri made 40k absolutely crazy money but its out there and it keeps happening at every auction! All be it with only the very best cars!

Am not sure there's a big enough following for our alfasuds to get anywhere near those heady heights any time soon!!

Hi Col, I think we all know that but I also think it is still improving.
Your car showed the values are going up and more interest is starting to be shown for our cars.
When you think about it , the Wheeler dealer one still went well. I know I work in the high end market, but prices still go up in all the classic markets. Who would have thought old banger Escorts 15 years ago would even make a grand !!?? There are more people about with money and I think there is a place for cars that still seem affordable to them for a folly and they are running out of good interesting cars to buy.
I will pm you tonight as I met your bidder at SAD but I have to pop out at the moment.

I had a look at the Peugeot 205 that went for £25K - it was rather unique, only had 5 miles on the clock supposedly, but looking at the engine bay it looked authentic and the whole car was factory fresh as if it had never turned a wheel, so if the provenance backs up the mileage, then one could understand why a well heeled pug enthusiast might go for it, if you like that sort of thing. The Capri was a Broadspeed one so it was unusual and looked pretty mint too, and there seem to be a lot of folk out there willing to spend silly money on what used to be pretty common Fords - but that was the reason I got into Alfas, they were much cheaper than the common XR3is of the day, and they stood out from the crowd. Unfortunately, if you want to get good money you need a crowd of folk wanting the same thing and willing to fight over it.

It seems that Col's 'Sud is not the only boxer entered in the auction, I'm not talking about common or garden porkers, but check out this one:

I knew they did a plat four post war, but I've not seen this engine before.

I notice the Sud didn't sell, how did it get on this time? - the other Alfas all sold by the looks of it.
