OK, I'm sure it's been asked before, what's the easiest method of doing a Sud clutch? Can the engine be supported from above and the box dropped from underneath?
Would like to leave the engine in place as one of the manifold bolts has been wound in at an odd angle so I'd rather not disturb if poss

I've done loads. Never tried with engine in.
Drop the engine and box to the floor. Then lift car and pull engine and box from underneath.

I've done it with the engine in place. It's a nightmare compared to dropping the engine and box as a complete unit.

It'd be far easier to deal with the cross threaded manifold stud.

We never removed the engine when changing clutches. But you do have to remove the exh manifold. You have to tilt the engine back to almost 45deg In order to slide the box off so the exh manifold just gets in the way. if you remove the engine and box completely From below then. You can slide the box off and leave the manifold on.
This was back when I enjoyed Having a fully equipped workshop with a lift
I’ve changed a sud clutch in an hour an 10 mins. (Including a brew)
I’ve also changed my 33 box in the paddock at thruxton on my back and didn’t remove the engine . the other problem is if it’s an inboard brake car the box is stupidly heavy and awkward to handle on the floor.
If I had to do one at home now I’d drop the entire unit On to A frame With wheels on so it can be wheeled out to save Hassle

I wheeled my unit out on a creeper board.
Car jacked up, lowered unit with a hoist.

I put the front wheels on DIY type ramps.
Lower the engine/box down using my lifting beam/chain block.
Put hardboard under and pull the unit out........its a tight fit.
Prob best to take the manifold off I think.....it could get damaged.

You can use a ladder to Lower the engine and drag it out.

Is the ladder to climb up and hook the chain block on the lifting beam!
Craig.....any photos of your ladder method?

Sorry no pictures. Get your car on axle stands like in Kegsti66 picture. I'd have it slightly lower and then raise it when the engine is on the floor. Slide the ladder under the car so it just past the far end of the gearbox. Lift the ladder at the front of the car. You will find that the sump fits in between two treads so sits in the gap. Lift the ladder to take the weight. Get someone to pull the bolt then lower engine to floor. Raise car so engine fit under the front. Use ladder to slightly lift engine and pull ladder and engine from under car.

I'll be doing it on my two post ramp, hopefully that should ease things, pallet with a scrap tyre on the floor, drop engine onto pallet, lift ramp, sounds easy!

Do you use the ladders to put it back in? Sounds interesting may be with a skateboard under the far end? Does the oil filler spout remove? Seems like thats the highest thing you have to clear, might angle grind it off if it doesn't and refix with a large hose.

If you have an engine hoist use that to lift the body once eng/trans is on floor... when I removed my engine the highest things to get over were carbs and their horns.
Cheers

You can use the ladder to put it back in splant. If the floor is nice and even you won't need a skateboard.

I use the ramps as it keeps front suspension in right place so xmember goes straight back on.

Position the Jack so cup is behind sump, confront of gearbox. As you drop it all down it sits o the Jack so you can pull it out
