gearboxes

Post by KevJTD »

a few gearboxes for sale, a small part of what i bought last year, moving the sud today so had a look at these as were in the way.

there are 3 gearboxes here, all in unknown condition.

they are obviously not sud ones, or early sprint for that matter, no studs for inboard calipers.

from fitting a clutch plate and counting rotations i've worked out which ones they are from, gear ratios etc. reverse gear is the same ratio on all 'boxes so working which diff is in was easy without having to take the sump pan off and count teeth.

for ease of identification the 3 will be known as mount (the one with the mount on  ) , no mount (...... :D ) & 4X4 (again......)

the diff ratio in the "mount" gearbox is a 3.7. i calculated all the 5 gear ratios and they correspond to the S2 33 & sprint 1.7. seeing as it has a speedo drive in place for a cable not an electric sender we can assume it's a sprint 1.7 QV gearbox.

the non mount 'box has a diff ratio of 3.88 again the 5 gear ratios were checked and they compare to a S2 33 1.5 ti. they also fit the same ratio to all 5 gears & diff as the S3 33 1.5, 1.7 & 16V. there is no drive in the speedo hole on this one.

the last is clearly a 4X4 'box but i didn't realise until now there are different ratios in those, i will check tomorrow.

there may well be different models that these 'boxes fit, please check the great list from alfa pages to see.

these 'boxes are as i say in unknown condition although they do all select gears and have oil in, rotate smoothly etc. i can't vouch for any more than that, even taking the sump pan off and having a look doesn't guarantee things.
so with that in mind i'm open to sensible offers, not big offers at all as being unknown they have limited value. they are of no use to me so grab a bargian and save me some storage space!

when i say sensible offers, i don't mean what you'd pay for a known 'box.

just don't offer the scrap man price.

i'd rather them go to a useful home than to be weighed in

These days mate, i'd say they're worth a fair bit, unknown or otherwise.

theres always good spares higher up the cogs even if the lower ones have signs of the usual gremlins, and seeing as these parts can't be bought anymore, even a box of bits has a decent value.

Its no mistake that i built my stock room over and around a slot for a handful of mixed boxes!

If you end up stuck with any of them mate, and you're sick or tripping over them, tag them with your name and bring them over to mine, i'll sit on them for you mate.

The 33 S2 1,5 ti has the same ratio as the S3 1,5 ie, 1,7 ie and the 16V. I have heard the the 16V has a thicker casting though :)

well spotted steffen, hadn't noticed that all the 5 gears and diff ratio were the same 8-)

so the non mount one would be suitable also for the S3 16V etc, although i know not about the casing thickness ;)

more a case of keeping spares that will be useful to me and distributing cheap spares to folks who may want them.

may well take you up on the offer though mate ;) , but may not need it.........
