Fuel pump

Post by alfadave »

Trying to get fuel thro to the carbs here:-

Put 2 galls of fuel in the new tank
Turned over on the starter....no fuel
Put a new mech pump on....still no fuel.

Took the pump inlet off and sucked the pipe.....got a mouthful of fuel!

The pump (Torino stamped on the side) has horz inlet, vert outlet pipes

12 mm spacer on the block for the pump.
Actuating rod measures 116.6mm

Not a drop of fuel coming thro
Any ideas would be welcome!

Tell you what I have had happen before Dave, the push rod gets tight in the casing so the distributor drive cam pushes the rod out but the pump spring doesn't have enough power to shove the pushrod back onto the cam so it does no pumping.
I've also seen the pump cam drive on the distributor shaft wear enough to prevent any cam action.
Easiest way to see if either is an issue is to take the pump off and lightly put your finger over the end of the pushrod to see if it pulses when the engine is cranked over, should be a good few mm's of movement and the rod itself move smoothly back against the cam, you'll need an assistant to turn the key of just hotwire the starter with a screwdriver... :D

Ditto !!
I had that problem with the rod sticking. Removed and oiled it all and filled the carb bowel with fuel to help with vacuum and with a running engine she started to suck the fuel through.

Thanks gents!
Dead right....sticking rod.
freed and lubed it up.All working now.

Had to suck some fuel thro to prime it.....another gobfull of petrol!

I remember years ago, our A35 had a priming lever on the pump....very useful that was.

The other problem I had, was both brass spigots on the Moprod pump were loose...it was old stock, but I never thought they would ever come loose.
I had to araldite them up.......good job I found it, they would have popped out on the road.

Also, the engine has been in storage for at least 2 years....had oil down the plug holes and turned by hand, but no doubt dried up round the fuel pump drive

Yes, my engine had sat for a very long time.
Good to hear it is running now. Another cross off the list. :D

Sadly not running yet.
Got fuel now, but no spark.
I've got a later Bosch electronic ignition.
And the original S2 loom.

Did have a spark before, but not now.

I googled ignition system checks, but all seems to relate to modern stuff.....coil packs,ECU,s etc

Possibly the amp mounted to the coil bracket . They were a common problem
Make sure you used conductive heat paste between the amp and the bracket if you change it .
