More relay confusion. Sorry
More relay confusion. Sorry
Trying to test electrics tonight and trying to work out what relay does what, and I am confused. I have managed to work out some, however reference to the Haynes manual throws up 2 permutations (pictured) - neither of which relate to my set up as I seem to have an extra relay in the mix.
I have taken a picture and I have worked out what 3 do. I also reckon the one I haven't labelled in the row of 4 is the horn relay. That just leaves the 2 either side of the small row of fuses. I just can't work out what they are for. Also the metal cased one seems to get a bit hot.....
Lastly - the high beam relay on the top right of the picture would appear to have a pin missing. The relay has 4 but the fuse box has 5 connections in there. I took a note of the make and part number and found a replacement with 5 intact pins - but it doesn't appear to work correctly with this fitted so have reverted to the one I thought was damaged. Are everybody else's the same?
Sorry for long winded query.

Re: More relay confusion. Sorry
Seems that photos 10.4 and 10.5 on the same page of the manual relate to your car.
The wiring diagram fig 12.30 seems to relate to your car.
Maybe if you colour coded the relays on this diagram, you could work out which is which?
The 14 fuses are identified on p. 141.
I had the same model and eventually worked it out, after some trial and error.....but electrics are my weak suit
Plenty of late Sprints still around....hopefully someone on here could shed more light on it.
Good luck
Dave

Relays aren't quite the witchcraft they seem to be, think of them merely as an extra switch.
There are differing types, changeover ones which switch power to one pin or another plus ones that merely switch stuff on and off.
A standard 4 pin relay works in the same way whatever the car if you know the pin numbers and what they refer to.
pin 30 is direct from the power source, usually battery feed.
pin 85 is earth
pin 86 is the feed in from whatever the relay is for, so if for example the horn relay then this pin is fed from the horn switch
pin 87 is power out, in the horn example it sends power to the horn.
simply put the power to the horn would be from the battery pin 30 to the horn so that the switch doesn't get the full current load.
hope that makes sense?
there are variations as I say,,5 pin ones differ as they can be for 2 output feeds for example powering auxiliary driving lamps but they can also be the type that swaps power from one pin to the other when operated.
So to decide what the relay should be doing then work out where the 30 and 87 pins are and bridge them, assuming you have 12V in the 30 pin connection. This will switch on whatever the relay is supposed to power, be it the rad fan or rear window demister or whatever.
Hope this helps.

Re: More relay confusion. Sorry
Excellent info. Thank you Kev. So basically bridge 30 to 87 to test. Simples

I don't know if this helps but... This is how the original headlight relay on my 88' 1,5 QV looks like. But my car is scandinavian version so it might be different than yours originally?
It seems to be a little hard to find model, 87 + 87b (85 30 87 87b). On the casing is just written "Sipea 0002 6J 12V". No mention about amps...
On my car that extra relay place is filled with windscreen wiper delay relay.

The one in your hand is a 5 pin relay called a "make and break" one, as in it will supply power to both 87 & 87b pins at the same time or cut power to both. The battery power comes in from the pin 30, when you turn the light switch the switch sends powers to pin 86 which pulls the internal switch inside the relay, this bridges between pin 30 & pins 87/87b in this case which sends power to your lights. These are used in lights as you can then of course have 2 separate power outs and hence fuse them separately..
The picture on this relay shows it more clearly..

The other more common 5 pin relay is called a changeover relay so it supplies power to either pin 87 or pin 87a , as in a "changeover" relay.
A 4 pin relay is just a make or break like the above 5 pin one but just one output.
Once you understand what you need the relay to power up it's easy to see what type you need.
On Robs' Imp I installed a few relays wheer previously it had none, things like the electric heated rear window and electric fan. I used relays from a box of spares I collect from dead cars, any old one will do if you undetsrand what you need it to do.

These old school cars with just power and earth are OK, modern stuff is just baffling.

Mystery relay - the one marked ??. Haynes manual pictures it but doesn't refer to it. When I bridge pins 30 and 87 it brings on the brake pad/fluid warning on the dash. Can anybody clarify for me?

Right folks - finally got the correct relay. If anybody needs to replace the main beam relay you need Durite 0-727-22. I bought one of the Bosch 0332019151 equivalent listed as compatible - but it didn't work either. I can confirm this Durite version works as it should. Now to sort the dodgy earths........petteri wrote:I don't know if this helps but... This is how the original headlight relay on my 88' 1,5 QV looks like.
