33/Sprint Racing Springs needed

Hi guys,

been looking everywhere for a set of STIFF racing springs for my racing Sprint.

Does anyone know where I can get a set ?
My Sprint has front 33 suspension (as its got the 16v engine in) and the rear suspension has been messed by so I could fit the rear diff, so I moved the top plates 15cm up so I could get the same ride height as the 33 (approximately).

Car is only intended for track use and hillclimbs.

Matching set with shock absorbers as well would be ideal, as I wont need to buy konis and have them re-valved.

Anyone got anything in mind ?
Used parts would do nicely as well

Think I might have some stiff sprint springs in my track sud.

Its a sprint axle, stock shocks, but race springs iirc.

And its all coming out....

Hi Chris,

Don't think there's anything suitable in the BLS boxes, we've been running 2.25" ID springs for years now. Are any of the Just Suds springs suitable?

I need Kev to remind me what the springs were.

I know there stiff, and the back end is low enough, and it was a sprint axle.

and there my knowledge ends....

KEV, KEVIN!

Right,

they were the race springs from the Colin Wing class c Sud.

Very stiff mate, but maybe that's what you need seeing as you're rwd and mid engined?

Thanks guys,

Bryan for looking mate :)

Shrew, I need some more info on this mate please

Stiff is exactly what I need, and lowering is a must.

The engine is up front, the rear axle was the π shaped and now there sits the rear diff of the p4

Only hope my measurements were right when I chopped up the rear suspension mounts and moved them up.
Here's what I mean...

Check out the rear suspension modification I did in order to accommodate the springs of a S2 Sprint (same as the 33 only a bit stiffer)

Then see how high the car sits at the moment.
The rear is extremely stiff due to heavy duty gas shocks and very little weight at the back. Front is soft.

Shrewy, got any pictures of how that sud sits ? You wouldnt happen to know what the poundage is on those, do you ?

the rear springs were on my track sud, the white one.

you can get an idea of the stance of the rear from that. was with a sprint axle which put them higher than would have been with a sud beam

I've been through Shrew's photobucket mate....

It looks pretty high

Dont forget that sprints have their springs more om top of the axle than a sud

Yes, well, thats a bit hard though.
I'll need to measure again how much higher I welded on my top spring pans

 what's a bit hard?

as i mentioned earlier, the springs were fitted on a sprint rear beam.
that sits the springs above the axle line, instead of under like a sud beam does.
probably 4" difference between the 2 beams at a guess.

He's not listening eh Kev

ha ha!

so simply put, unless you've welded the top spring retainer somewhere near the roof, the car would likely be lowered approx 3-4" would you say Kev? compared to a stock sprint.

Yes mate, but I'm already using stock height Sprint springs ! thats my point !
The front ones, I replaced the lower pan to the deeper one of the sud !

So , risking sounding a bit thick here, but are you saying that if I put those rear springs on , it will lower the car by 4 inches ???

The reason why I'm confused, is because I've never seen lower rear springs on either a sud or a sprint, even if its with the straight axle or the angled one.
The only difference between the 2 axle variations I've ever seen, is that in one case the car sits a lot higher than the other - that been said, I only found difference in the stiffness, which in the softer spring on a car with a straight axle, it would allow it to sit a bit lower...

if you draw a line through the middle of the wheels, side to side, in the line that the axle takes.
make that your imaginary centre line.
a sprint axle has the springs mounted above this line.
a sud axle has them mounted below it.
so a spring fitted to sud with a sprint axle, as opposed to a sud with a sud axle, will have a huge difference in ride height.

the difference in axles is more than simply being straight or bent. you need to take into account where the spring mounts, which is where the big differences come.

the springs that were on the back of my sud (now shrews sud) are very short and VERY stiff. not to be confused with any road springs, way stiffer. i needed to fit webbing to stop them falling out on cornering as they were under hardly any preload

Ok mate, thanks for the info. Thats what I wanted to hear :)

So thats regarding the rear ones. What about the fronts ?

And to clarify something, are the springs I'd be getting the ones you HAD on your Sud ?
What did you use on yours now ?

my sud is now shrews sud. the springs are still on it afaik?

fronts were a one off coilover built by GAZ.
can't see you getting them off the man :D

Hi all

Chris, once i pull the Sprint axle from the Sud, which will be when i have a refurbished Sud axle to take its place with rear handbrake mods etc etc, then most parts will available from it, including the springs.

Have you got any trips to blighty planned at all? as shipping would likely be ridiculous! :(

Trips... well....

I had one planned in February, but my expenses got the best of me :?

I need to finish up 2 huge projects before I can move again.

However, when I do manage, I'll drop you a visit, dont worry :p
Or maybe we can meet up at Rodgers if he's up for it ? ;)

No matter, I can use my old OMP springs for now, but a good racing set is a must in the future 8-)
