S1 to S3 Boot Spoilers
S1 to S3 Boot Spoilers
Hi All,
Lately i have been contacted by several people enquiry about converting the S1 boot spoilers to fit an S3,
here are my findings and some what painfull learning curve.
As some of you know i purchased an ex class A racer with full fibreglass panels, which i set about modifying
to replicate a trofeo racer without the wide arches to compete in the the tin tops and future classics.
I contacted Bob Wright to replicate rear wings from a pair of S3 original wings, kindly loaned by John from justsuds,
Bob took a set of templates from the original wings for future use and then went on to make a set of wings
somewere between the wide arch wings from the class A racer and the original S3 wings ensuring a perfect
fit back onto the racer.
Also delivered to Bob was a genuine S1 rear spoiler and front spoiler (also loaned from John)
Bob took a template of the front spolier in 2 pieces for future use and made 2 no full piece front spoilers for myself.
Bob also took templates of the original rear spoilers again for future use, i took measurements from a S3 tailgate and
instructed Bob to make a rear spolier to this dimension, 40mm less than the original, 2 no were produced.
Unbeknown to myself the rear wings on a S1 are 20mm wider over the rear lights than a S3 hence making the 2 no wing spoliers over sized,
also when fitting up the rear wings it became apparent that the fibre glass lower section of the tailgate was shorter than
a standard S3 spoiler, resulting in the replica fibreglass spoilers all requiring adjustment.
I then reduced the 2 no wing spoliers by 20mm by carefully cutting out a parallel section then bounding the 2 pieces back together with epoxy resin,
this was reinforced from behind with plastic splicing pieces, the joint was then over bonded with epoxy and sanded to a smooth finish. i carried out the
same procedure on the main boot spolier.

Re: S1 to S3 Boot Spoilers
Hi Liam
well done mate, you've got that working a treat!
seeing as i'm one of those folk you've been talking to about it, i might aswell share my own good fortune in the same subject.
i was round at a lovely old fella house just last week, to see what sud spares he was selling. Amongst the stuff i knew about there were other boxes that he want to show/sell me as part of another larger package price.
one box was full of rear lights, and without diving too far in, i came across a pair of S1 tailights, Beauty!
we did a deal, i filled the van of anything he wanted to part with, biody panels, engines, gearboxes, lights and trim etc etc and off i went.
once home and routing through, at the bottom of that box was the two end pieces of the 3 piece spoiler that as you know Liam i've been gagging to do the very same conversion as yourself!
Yippeeee!
Plus, i've located a decent enough centre spolier too now, so once the postie has done his bit, i'll have a complete genuine S1 spolier.
However, i am truly torn about going with the spoiler as you have done Liam, because S1 spoliers along with the simplified rear lights and back end just floats my boat big time, and my sud will essentially look like this
or, do i use it as a basis to build what neither love nor money seems to be able to find, but simply, and absolutely, Rocks my World! Twice!! every time i see it!
i have tried to get one through Fabrica Italiana, the portuguese guys who replicate the original Trofeo kit, but i don't think they do this part, but i do think i will be able to come up with something of a fabrication and fibreglass that would be close enough for the look and effect for me.
Your Sud is going to look fabulous Liam, of that i'm sure.
I'm not so sure what sort of a job i will make of mine, but i'll be giving it a damn good go!

which also works! ha ha!
my personal issue, is that if i did that, my Sud would look like a grey plagurism of Teds, which would be gorgeous of course and i'd do it in a heartbeat, but then neither would be quite as unique, and thats as important to me as i'm sure it is to Ted too.
they all look great really, tough to find a bad'un!

Thanks Shrew,
Yes a great looking sud.
Sorry mate i don,t have a spare fibreglass tailgate,
i have just offered Tim Heyes a fibreglass racing bonnet, if he declines i,am open to offers.
Some more pics of how i aim to acheive a semi trofeo look by using a modified S3 spoiler kit.
And a little teaser for Shrew, i toyed with the full width trofeo kit and fited it up with the compomotive
to see how it fitted, hard work to fit up and the 60 series tyres on a 13inch rim don,t look the best.

Hi Shrew,
A pic of your front splitter from 2003, the other photo is from the 80,s prior to it undergoing
the fibreglass treatment (blue), i prefer the splitter on the blue sud to the trofeo and white sud,

AAAHHHHHH thats my baby!
no bumpers, all width, skirts and arches
still not sure they'll manage to contain the 9J+ monster rims that are going in there, but the Volkswagen lads are going to sh!t themselves just looking at it!
Thanks Liam, that really has re-lit the fire under my Arris, ive got to get this Sud sorted this year. (Shush Chris, before you start! ha ha!)
Does it make you want a Sud JB?
hey, and whats weird, is that i once owned the other Torquoise sud in the background too, Colin Wings S2 Class C car that was, now owned by Steve, SMusician.

Shrew - next time you are at BLS take a look at the large photo next to the door into the workshop - its Mark Riddles supercharged 33, closely followed by what is now Liam's car and JP Dalley's 75 turbo at Snetterton! Sud was owned and driven by Andy Steavenson at the time.

That second picture is of the car in 1989 when run by Paul Fasey. He bought it from Nick Humphrey at the end of 1988.88liam wrote:Hi Shrew,

The man in the background holding on to the fence is my Dad who, unfortunately died in 2003. So, thank you for posting the picture - it's made me very happy and sad in equal measure!

Re: S1 to S3 Boot Spoilers
Hi Liam,
Absolutely no offence taken so please don't worry at all. It just knocked me sideways a bit when I logged on and saw the Old Fella in the photo - he loved being part of the racing scene and being around people racing Alfas so it was lovely to see.
That meeting was Brands in June 1989 when the Alfas had to share the grid with the Maranello Ferrari Championship - you can imagine their faces when the Alfa lot turned up! It was won by Nick Sismey in a Sud with Mark Riddle second in the Supercharged Sud (or it may have been the other way around). I'm sure Tom or Bryan will correct me.
Me? I came flat last in the Alfas but beat a couple of Ferraris but realised I needed some BLS magic in my Sud and never looked back!
Cheers,
Ted.

Hi Ted
Days gone by eh?
bls magic eh? I've had a wave of Toms wand myself tonight! (easy!
)
Been on the ramp with the track sud, see what kev kankinnen had bent up front! Ha ha!
Nothing much as it happens, but I have a full compliment of refurbished and powerflex bushed front suspension to fit anyway, then ill get it all set up spot on.
One step closer

Shrew, Hello Mate!
Don't get me on nostalgia - especially with a bit of red wine and having listened to too much Radiohead! Just so many fantastic memories involved with our cars, eh?
So, you've got Kev's car? Or have I missed something? Are you taking it over?
Need to catch up at some point - Crossles and racing plans, etc. It's going to be great!

Re: S1 to S3 Boot Spoilers
Aaah, been at the vino have you? You old lush! Lol!
Yes ive bought kevs track sud, so watch out twinkle toes (as if!)
It made good sense all round really. Kev would prefer to concentrate on a real mint job of the S1 sud he bought, so the track car would be largely static, and I had a solid shell, with fresh 16v motor, cage, 1.2ti gearbox and lsd, etc etc to start my own hot sud off again.
We do need a catch up soon though mate, its been bedlam this end, and yours I suspect.
Are you going to put a post up in racer section regarding the single seater season ahead mate?
