i know what you mean mate, largely thanks to the aircooled VeeDub fraternity having more money than sense, even used ones are going for silly figures now.

if you weigh it up, by the time you've bought 25 year old carbs, 2 x service/rebuild kits, jetted them how they need to be, you're actually not far off at all, in fact you could be worse off.

thankfully these came as part of a package, so H didn't feel the full impact of them :D

Hi Shrew, though it was expensive at the time
But now realize I got a good price.
Everything else is either £500 or £1000 (probably same for the exhaust LOL)
Nice to see things moving on - as you didn't reply to my text - when do you want to pick her back up ?????

At least there's no comments about the colour of the engine :D :D :D

Ayeup H

sorry about the text, yep i got it but i've just been bonkers busy this week, good job we've got the forum eh! :D

i'll sort the belts my end H, and get cracking on with the final build up of the motor.

I'm kinda surprised too that the colour scheme hasn't been met with more, errr, trepidation?

as for the exhaust, and those two familiar prices, well, it'll be closer to one than the other by the time we're done with m3 quad tips and the like, and i bet you can guess which price that one is! ;)

you do have bloody expensive taste H, China's civil engineering projects are on hold whilst we buy your steel in! lol!

When can we have it back H, how soon will it be free?

Hi Shrew
TBH you can have it when you want - even tomorrow
Just let me know and I'll make sure she's ready - the ICE bloke hasn't started it yet so no probs there and all I really need to do is to fit the nearside rear window and she'll be watertight.

Ok Dude (or is that KEV VW ID  )
If it's going to be then can I just put the petrol tank in the boot so you can offer it up for the exhausts??
Also I would mind "comming up" when your doing the exhaust but I need to give a weeks notice for time off - can stay "over night" in a premier inn if OK

do you think you could have the petrol tank hung in H.

with quad tips and everything else to line up, i think we'd run out of trans' jacks to keep things upwards that want to come downwards! lol! :D

hmmmmm, coming together then mate, well done.

got your message earlier H, and i've been working towards a monday/ tuesday collection, only to have some change to arrangements (funeral :( ) as a spanner in the works.

I still could really do with it next week, so hopefully wednesday/thursday H.

how would that work out for you?

Hi Shrew, sorry to hear about the loss,

What ever suits you mate - shame the ICE / ramp man couldn't fit her in this week as I could of finished the interior off and fitted the brake / petrol lines off - instead of having to fit the tank on the floor ( I remember what a pain the sprint was  )

If you can let me know a date when you'll want my input on the exhaust I can come up and just make sure my idea looks OK.

Just one more thing have you got the front engine mount as I can't remember painting it :?:

Thanks

Hi H

thanks mate. Not my own loss, but my miss's nan, but with the kids and everything else, its all upside down :(

i'll be checking about the exhaust appointment tomorrow hopefully, so i'll let you know that its all confirmed time wise and everything.

I have to say, whilst i don't mind at all, its a sud and youre a mate, but Wayne isn't keen on voyeurs!

Although you are completely different H, the last alfa lad nearly ended up in the tube bender! ha ha!

If you're coming up H, best to let us crack on with at least the manifold end of things first, especially as that tends to be where my own main input is, and then once beyond that, he's free to construct the design as set out beforehand, which i guess is where you'd like to swing in anyway isn't it mate, at the noisy end of things? lol!

Hey, we can do lunch! ha ha!

Oh, and yes, the engine mount is attached to the front plate already, always was.

a few little bugs today. the supplied gearbox rear mount was shocking, so i've raided my own for you, but i'm short of the bush for the gear selector to sit on, and a few nuts and bolts but i'll be able to improvise most things, but maybe not all.

i'll keep you posted, but nothing major or of a delaying nature hopefully.

Sud safely back up to my yard H.

i'll do a bit of plumbing on the motor whilst still on the stand, and then have a juggle round with the cars, my sud for your sud into the workshop, reunite engine and gearbox, and line it up for reinstallation.

I'll keep it all posted up here.

ps - do you take your pictures with a James Bond Biro or something H, how do you manage to get them so small? :D

Hi Shrew - you got back then :D

One thing I did forget was to give you the front discs so it was a waste of time giving you the drive shafts

On the subject of pictures the only way I can get them down to anywhere near less than 20KB is it shrink / condense them which makes them like that - unless you know different :?: :?: :?:

Never had this problem on AO

Off to bed now - another 5.15am start

I'm sure H is gagging to report a bit on todays progress and work too, but seeing as he's likely still driving home, i'll dive in first!

So it was a "crack'o sparrers fart!" kinda day for me, trailering the Sud over to the wayne and the exhaust workshop for us to do a complete front to back custom manifold and system on FMJ.

lt needs to be an early start doing so much, or it becomes a very late finish, so the moment i arrived, it was onto the ramp with her and start making the equal length primaries up.

I tailored the lengths to suit an 8v, with fast road cams, so not as short as could be in a race revvy 16v, and decent secondaries, which should all help to free her up whilst holding onto the bottom and mid range characteristics of the 8v motors.
DSC_3187 (1280x720).jpg
DSC_3189 (1280x720).jpg

and then manifold closed off with the final third pipe up to the silencer joint
