Alfasud Super up for grabs
Alfasud Super up for grabs
Saw this Super on Piston Heads. Looks complete and in reasonable condition.

I am not the vendor, but have a similar Super in yellow on a T plate currently being restored.
It would be nice if this one went to an appreciative home.

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
I'm strangely attracted to this. I guess this is the closest I will get to my old 5M. Which AROC member is this? Does anyone know?
Had: 1974 Alfasud 5M, 1989 Alfasud Sprint 1.5QV,
Got: 1986 Alfetta GTV6
Want: Alfasud 5M, S1 Alfasud1.2 or 1.3Ti

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
I think the owner is called George Cole
Seen this car a few times over the years and it is a nice example
Let's hope it finds a good home - looks good value to me

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
I think this car also did a trip to northern Italy a few years ago. It has a lovely, genuine look to it.
Would love it but I only have room for one !!

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
I know George Cole and his cars, he is very well known at AROC rather than our little forums.
He raced hillclimb and sprint for many years, until recent health issues have scuppered things i suspect.
I bought a load of parts from him when he was clearing out anything none SC, but it appears it is time for even that to go, which is a shame.
Its a good solid car, but not perfect as i recall when i saw it anyway. A couple of areas weren't perfectly matched paint colour, and there might be the odd blemish or two reappearing by now, but don't quote me on that, it was a couple of years ago almost.
Its still very worth the money i think, and very worth a look at for someone who wants something to get in and drive, no work required.
Good luck anyone interested

That one seems to have gone. Some lucky sod has got a real bargain!
This one on eBay seems less of a good deal. There are some opportunists about!

Maybe its time to think again Tony?
This year has been more than kind to us on our cars values, and speaking from someone who still needs and likes to find a bargian, i'm still all for it and not fighting whatsoever!

fIt looks nice but i dislike it when people quote well another car sold for x amount, it probably did because it was worth it, I've been to see loads of cars where the sellers are in dreamland because of the price others have sold for.
Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
Hello everyone, I'm new on here, and new to the alfasud, but I bought this one off George.
Its a nice car, the description by petrolhead below is accurate in my opinion. I have used it quite a bit since I bought it, and am collecting parts to do some 'improvements'.
The paint is miss matched in places, and I will get it painted, but not a priority. Don't want to tempt fate, but it runs nicely, changes nicely, stops ok, but tested hard braking the other day and it pulled to the left quite scarily!
In my opinion it is a good honest, solid car, that has been well looked after and maintained. It appears on the face of it to be very solid, but we all know what can lurk beneath. George was a really nice guy who obviously loves his Alfa's and motorsport, I am sorry for him that he doesn't have the time or energy for the alfas anymore, though his daily is a really nice 145.
I have bought just about every component for the cooling system, just waiting for water pump to arrive, then I am going to replace all of the cooling system - Has anyone used waterless coolant? Looks like a good idea?
George also kindly let me have a block that had been re-bored to 1371 with new pistons and polished crank, I want to build this into a twin carb unit, think I have found some heads and carbs that would be suitable any thing I need to look out for?
Would like a more free flowing exhaust, the one on the car is a good stainless system so I will save it as a spare, can anyone recommend a good more free flowing system?
Finally suspension, - It is a bit tired, still serviceable, but I would like to uprate it, not to track spec, but fast road for want of a better expression. I see it is incredibly difficult to find suitable parts, does anyone have any reccomendations?
I will be on the look out for 'performance' parts, so if anyone has anything interesting for sale please let me know.
All the best
Jon

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
Welcome Jon
Someone smarter than me will perhaps help on this also , but on the heads there are flat type and domed. If the pistons have dishes in them then you need flat I think.
Stick to 36mm carbs on a 1300/1400 for road use - they will be cheaper to buy than 40's and you can stick bigger chokes in - thy will give just as much power on a mild engine I'd suggest.

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
Hi Veesix75, thanks for the reply.
I'm just going through all the bits and pieces I have got. the pistons are dished, and I have 3 sets of heads, one set is chambered, the other two sets are flat. I suspect the chambered heads are off a 1.7 or a 1.5? so I'm looking at using the flat heads. Will probably offer the chambered heads on here.

Hi Jon,
Welcome to the forum.
Love the car you bought, good luck with the project.
Do you plan to keep her looking pretty standard?
Is that correct, George took it to Italy a few years ago and it was featured in the owner club mag ?

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
I suspect you're quite right keith, plus i remember this feature on his garage wall too
The car is certainly a good'un, and i'm very pleased to hear it has a nice new appreciative home too, well done all!
Lat time i was there i took these seeing as the sun was shining on us
I reckon you've done very well getting that rebuilt block included too, nice bit of kit that. He asked me to try and sell it for him when we last met but back then i suspect it sounded a little dear for some folk, but i reckon it'd be cheap today, and could well be the start of a very lively little number!
Now performance parts
sadly you just missed out a full set of Koni suspension i had up for grabs, but i strongly suspect that John at Justsuds, (also on here as our resident stockist!) will have something similar to that, along with a host of other options too i shouldn't wonder
Exhaust?, well maybe i can catch you myself for that one when you're ready
finally, without wanting to air too much of George's laundry, how is he anyway?

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
Hi All,
Yes it is the car George took to Italy, I think I have a photo somewhere of it whilst it was there. If I can find it will post it on here. I do plan to keep it looking fairly standard. Id like to lower it a little bit, and stiffen it up a bit, those Koni's would have been great. It will get painted at some point, but its very presentable so not a priority.
I'm trying to work out a plan of action, I have emailed John at Just Suds, about a few bits and pieces, and am awaiting his reply, I have found a full 1.5ti engine that seems like a fair price, and it includes the carbs and linkage too, so that might be my best bet, but I want to use the block George gave me seeing as though it has had that work done.
John said he had a ansa manifold, but it was a bit thin, and a 'sprintex'? exhaust of a 33. I think I asked him about suspension parts, if so he didn't have anything, but I could be wrong so will have to check with him.
I don't think its likely I am going to use the chambered heads, so if anyone wants them let me know. I'd like to swap them for something that might be useful for my build.
Can you PM on this site? Id like to talk to you about an exhaust please Shrew, get an idea of price and then I can put fit it into my shopping priorities! The way I am thinking is do the suspension, braking, possibly exhaust on this car. At the same time I can build up the engine. That way the car should be up to scratch before the engines ready.
Regarding the engine, Id like to put in some hotter cams, not race or anything like that, but a bit more lively, I'm going to balance the clutch, crank, flywheel, pulley. I don't think there is much point polishing the heads? (open to advice), and really can't imagine it would be worth the cost of having them gas flowed. Looking for 36mm webers or dellortos, with individual filters. I do have a set of carb manifolds that look like they will do the job. I guess these came of the chambered heads. Looking at getting about 100hp at the flywheel out of a 1371 - realistic? Could I go for more? (without spending 1000's)
George is well, i think its just driving old cars he finds a bit hard work after his injury, but when i picked the car up he had been up a ladder trimming the hedge in his garden so all well.
Nice to meet you guys on here, I'm a bit of a novice so probably won't be able to help you old pro's, but if I can I will. If anyone is ever up in sunny N. Yorks get in touch and call in for a cup of tea.

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
Glad to hear george is well, thats great
100hp from a 1371?
do-able, but you might have to rethink the tame'ness of your cam preferences, and be thinking more on the wild side, maybe even a tad more carb too.
think about the factory kit that went into the Trofeo race cars, which were 1.3's, its all pretty wild stuff to make good power relatively speaking.
Feel free to PM me for more details on performance exhaust stuff, always here mate, ready to help
You mention upgrading brakes aswell as stiffening/lowering the suspension, which leads me to ask if you've considered the move to outboard hubs and brakes, a'la the 33 set up?
The choices of upgrading inboards is enormously limited, and whilst i'm a fan of the design, i can't advocate sticking with them if you want to go for more performance really.
If you did want to move to outboards, i might be able to help again with some suspension options, but have a ponder first eh.
Always like a nice northern cuppa, proper spoon bending stuff, the kinda bags a man can handle, tea bags that is! lol!

Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
Thanks all for the further comments, Yes you got lucky with those Koni's alfachris, Id have had them if Id been in time! 100hp looks a tad optimistic then, as I want around town drivability too (There is a chance my daughter will have this car in about 18 months when she turns 17 - she loves it!)
Nearly all the cooling system components have arrived just hoping the rest arrive this week, then thats my job for the weekend.
John at Just suds replied about heads and carbs etc. so that looks to be sorted! I have ordered some new front discs, they are new Brembos and are for inboard brakes - I suspect when they arrive they will be wrong, but fingers crossed! I have been told Ferodo DS2500 are good pads if a little expensive - anyone tried them?
shocks / inserts advice please?
All the best

Hi kevjtd. Please pm me if you can find them. I am interested.
Re: Alfasud Super up for grabs
found 'em
dirty and clearly 2nd hand, as i got them actually. all seem fine though, decent amount of resistance but how much more uprated they are over OE i've no idea. the yellow koni's were adjustable so able to be made stiffer. these may well be a little step up. was gonna keep them to try on my S1 ti if the ones i have on now need changing in the future but stock seems to be the way i'm going.
one front insert has the bumpstop missing but guess any similar would do. the front inserts bolt to the bottom of the casing using the threaded hole as seen in the pic
pm me an offer if you're interested, postage should be about £20 i'd have thought unless we meet up sometime..
