cheers ian. i do have that brochure so guess just taking it out and offering it against the car is an option. just don't want it to look wrong or wonky

My 77 ti has a ti badge, but then it may not be the original boot. Personally i will not put the cloth ti stickers on, just don't like them.
Interested to see your heater box, i remember when i put my car together that there were some differences between early boxes and later ones, and had to do some work to convert a later box. For the life of me i can't remember what the differences were
Other diffences seem to be the type of carpet fitted to early and late S1 tis, the early ones like Joanthan Trinder's have a large loop speckley carpet.
Getting a bit anoraky now, so i'll sign off

the heater boxes are quite different between the years, we have a large selection to chose from! was able to compare the S3 one as we had a car to hand, and a sprint too.
the early ones only have 2 control cables, 3 on the later ones.
the heater matrix of a later one won't also fit an early box, the matrix tapers in on the older one.
metal plate over the front of heater pipes on early one
just a few differences i've noted so far...
also the water collection tray that sits above it under the bonnet has a few varying choices, 3 different ones i think we found? will find out which one i need when it comes to fitting it

Ah yes, i remember now, foot operated flap control on early cars, cable control on late models.
I noticed when comparing my 1977 with my friend's 1976 that the under bonnet wiring was different colours too. Also different brake fluid reservoir, his not having level sensors. His car also had front brake disc ducts.

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
Oh yes I remember on my yellow 5m, to get heat to the floor you had open it manually, then my sprint Veloce was much more sophisticated with a dash control for screen or floor heat

work this morning, thunder and heavy rain at dinnertime when i got home so not a lot of point in going outside. chilled for an hour or two

feddled with the 147 for a while, then john came round for a chat so we dragged the sud out.
looked at a few bits that need lookign at, finding out what goes where. just chatting really. john has even more of an itch to get projects than me so is fun hearing his ideas

so as the car was out and the sun now shining i fitted a few bits that were ready.
headlight units went on mainly so i don't damage them in the shed!
front covers then over them. quite chuffed with how they've come out to be honest.
the quad headlights transform the look of a sud, really makes the world of difference

other bit i had to hand ready to fit was the door mirror, another nice shiny bit
a few detail questions to come for all you S1 owners, just to sort a few things for me

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
ok, the questions.
first off, the choke cable. i have 2 types for the single carb model in the bunch of cables at my disposal. difference is obvious, one has a circular knob and one a square one. which type should the S1 one have?
i'm guessing maybe the square one as I also have twin carb choke cables with the circlular ones....unless the square one is a sprint type?
next question, the accelerator cables fixing at the carb, i'm guessing a simple bracket that goes where the 2 bolts are on the manifold? be easy enough to make something but if anyone has a pic handy of what the proper thing looks like then i can search for one tomorrow in our stockpile

lastly the rear boot latch. i'm thinking the one pictured is the correct one, but i'm missing a lever? unless it's off a compeletly different car that is!
again, pics would be most appreciated

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
Hi Kev,
Looks the mutts nuts!

Lights set it off great..
I can help with a few of the questions.
Choke cable is the round one, goes in lower half of steering column surround.
Boot latch looks correct, the boot catch locates through the top and cable operates on the lever at the bottom, the way it is in the picture is correct looking from inside the car I think, the cable runs inside the inner upper rear panel and runs down the l/h side of the boot floor with the wiring loom and along the inner sill originally with some clips with a clip at one end and a tywrap on the other end
Yes seem to remember there is a bracket missing on the accelerator cable / manifold, I have a couple of single carb. engines in storage that have probably got one you can have if you can't find the original one

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
we tried the catch in the back panel space, fitted nicely and looked at home, just there is no chance of it functioning as it is? nothing lever wise in it to latch onto the catch that's on the boot? like a piece is missing inside the catch?
the pointed part of the bootlid goes through the oblong hole in the latch part, sideways on sort of thing....just there's no lever for it to latch against if you see what i mean

going to have a look in the stash tomorrow mate, if i don't find the throttle cable bracket i may be back

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
found a throttle cable bracket and a few other bits we needed.
thought we'd also got the correct wiper linkage but seems we grabbed a handful of sprint ones

anyone know if the S3 ones are the same? guessing so, hope so........

another question though is where is the water temp sender located? can't find it on the engine or manifold anywhere. i wondered if the blanking plug near the carb was for it but john's not convinced....anyone know where it should be?
pic is where i can only assume it should be?

Hi Kev,
I thought it was on top of the cylinder head, R/H side one I think between the cylinders probably obscured by the inlet manifold,
Cheers,

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
thanks for that mate, will have another look. john wasn't sure at all that it was/should be where that blanking plug would be and logical thinking would have it nearer the heads like on the twin carb cars, a more accurate reading of the hotspot on the engine..vecchioalfa wrote:Hi Kev,

will have a grope around to see what's there if not take the manifold off and have a butchers
think i've managed to suss the rear catch out too, came to me last night in a fit of inspiration!
if i'm right in my thinking then the catch is actually complete as it is?
it appeared that there must be a lever missing, only the one that insisted on being tucked away under the spring tension. dawned on me last night (won't tell you where i was sat
am i guessing correctly?
won't be able to get the sud out to have a look just yet but may be tempted to pull it out one night....

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
bit more detective work.
john had a ride up to colelct some more parts amongst other stuff.
he came back with some nice bits, wiper linkages etc.
no rear reflectors but think rich has saved the day on that count again, cheers mate

the engine in the sud was also missing an oil pressure warning light sender, just a blank in there for some reason. john came up trumps with an adapter and sender ready to fit in.
also, and another piece of the jigsaw, is the water temp sender he came back with. well 2 slightly different ones actually but both of the same thread.
couldn't resist looking under the suds' bonnet to see if i could at last i could find a home for the sender.
nothing at all under the manifold ends, around the heads, nothing.
i searched through all the different sud manuals i have and no clues.
what is clear though is the early single carb suds just have the warning lamp, only the ti models getting a normal gauge. that's the little sender that bolts to the drivers side head.
i followed the flow diagrams for the cooling system, water flows through to the underside of the thermostat housing but when the stat is closed it goes towards the heater pipes, through the bottom of the inlet manifold under the carb.........so could that blanking plug be about right for a hotspot after all?
took it out and it has the exact same thread as the senders john brought. sender fits in no problem , so i can only assume that the temp sender does indeed go in the central point of the manifold, under the carb near the heater outlet...

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
Please you got it sorted in the end, I remember a sender being on the cylinder head on a series 1 saloon donkeys years ago which all makes sence in what you are saying. These early cars differ quite a lot from the later ones.....
Yes I think your rear latch will work as it is, never studied one in detail though as never known one give any trouble, bound to be low tech like most things on a series 1

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
i can finally lay the water tempt sender location to bed, at last!
went to see tom & phil tonight at BLS, top fellas as always

anyway, i quizzed tom on the temp sender location. well, let's have a look at a ti manifold he says, then off we go to the stores and there sits a single carb sud ti manifold.....with a water temp sender where mine has a blanking plug, under the carb
now we just have to figure out why mine has it! my guess is it sprung a leak and was changed for a blanking plug sometime ago.....although john reckons the gauge did actually work before it came off the road.....and they haven't built any other single carb engines up in the meantime to mix the manifolds up.......and it is the original engine i got with the car, we both thought that at the same time last weekend so had to check the engine number on the logbook

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
Main thing is you've sorted it, the wiring might help deduce where it was originally/before with the length of it and therefore where it could reach to, like you say it could have been leaking in the past and someone had a blank at hand, I will have a look at the original engine that came out of mine next time I am where its stored and see what that fitted and where and let you know

Re: My S1 Sud Ti
well, nearly got through august and no updates! john pointed it out to me last night that nothing much seems to have been done of late

had loads of other distractions over the last few weeks, holiday, 3 bsb rounds to visit, changed the 147, changed my job, etc etc so the sud hasn't really had a thing done to it.
have been down the shed tonight at last, time to get a job or two done.
i've been tripping over a new/old stock front pipe for a while so may get it bolted to the car this weekend out of the way.
before it goes on though i just have to tidy up the internal welds that the manufacturer saw fit to put directly inside the flanges!
takes a little while to grind off as the weld is very tough, but a carbide burr does the trick.
the restriction in that part is huge, down to as little as 21mm diameter opening where the weld is at its worst. once ground out it opens to about 29 to 30mm so a huge restriction to flow.
i will also put some more weld on the outer part to add some strength back, don't want it cracking in the future, but also making sure not to get in the way of the flange bolt holes!
hope to get a little more doen this weekend despite the distractions lined up with it being motogp silverstone and all...
