Re: 16v Carb Mainfold and Twin 40's
Hi Justin
the manifolds are available from only a few sources new, Gazoli, De Michele, and Motorman253, to the best of my knowledge.
We did a small group buy of these http://www.di-michele.de/html/ansaugbrucken.html
and those of use that are already running them have reported good success
The Gazolis are very reportedly very nice, but few of us here have any real experience of them.
the Motorman253 were the versions that some folk had water leaks from, BLS included, but once solved, these do still perform well, so nothing wrong with the shape overall, it was poor castings, and the screw holes don't always line up for the throttle linkages. That said, they are the only models i believe that have the throttle linkage mount extensions integral to the casting, and not an extra to be made or sourced elsewhere.
I have recently had reason to contact Motorman253, and he assured me that the newer versions are a better casting and problem free now,
They are also the best value, if they are coolant tight, and the holes line up, these are a bargain actually.
The De Michele versions we bought are somewhere in the middle. No throttle linkage mounts, but a good solid casting that as far as i know no-one has had issue with. A well made bit of kit.
There are several DIY versions out there, most commonly you take an 8v carb manifold top and weld it to the 16v injection manifold base, blending the inner as you go. This works if done well, as proven by a good few.
There are also some billent cnc machined block versions, also reportedly working well, but finding someone willing to do it today would likely be your biggest issue Justin.
hope this helps

Thanks for the detailed reply Shrew, very helpful.
How much are Motorman253's? Will he be willing to offer me a replacement guarantee that they will not leak?

Re: 16v Carb Mainfold and Twin 40's
You are rapidly catching up with the dilemma Jube currently faces.
Motorman253 (ebay id) will sell them direct via PayPal, for 200 quid, delivered!
Now, If, the castings are better, and IF his screw holes and threads are now where they should be, that makes them a bargain, no question.
The Di-Michele versions will cost a little more, I think about 230/240, but you will still need the mount plates making up by either lasercutting from a template or milling some one off's?
So youll soon be up to 300 quid going this route, so do you save 100 if the gamble pays off, or dive a little deeper and put in some legwork?
As for warranty, youd have to ask im afraid Justin.
Is it worth Jube and yourself speaking on this subject? You could both benefit from a small group buy again with another name or two I'm sure.
Cheers

Hi Justin,
I'm also after a pair of 16v Carb Manifolds (from either Motorman or Di Michele), so maybe we could get a bit of discount on 2 sets?
Cheers,
Julian.

Re: 16v Carb Mainfold and Twin 40's
Yes, I need them ASAP too.
How about I contact Di Michele (Who I've already communicated with) to try and beat their €288.99 delivered to UK price and maybe you can try and beat the £200 delivered price that Shrew has been quoted by Motorman?
How does that sound to you?

I've already contacted motorman, but he's not emailed back.. I'll try again tomorrow.
Have you sorted your twin 40's?

Hi Justin, I've already got Twin Dellorto 40's from a 1.7 8v engine, which i'll transfer over with minor revisions to the jetting.
I'll email Di Michele again today to try and get a discounted price for 2 sets of manifolds.

Re: 16v Carb Mainfold and Twin 40's
I really dont know if motorman made new castings, but up till now, everyone had problems with his leaking adaptors.
I had bought them off him to begin with, but then I didnt want to take the chance so I sold them on cheaper and got a good set with an order we placed with Shrew, Steve and a couple of others

Re: 16v Carb Mainfold and Twin 40's
if motorman does sort out his emails and answer you back, could you ask him to reply to the half dozen emails i sent him asking for a refund?
the ones her sold me were stuff that nightmares are made of, every hole was out, the surfaces are not skimmed square to each other .. and of course they leak.
my sud is on hold while im renovating my house, but when i get on it again the plan is make some myself... like i should have done before i bought from motorman

Not a resounding endorsement eh Kam!
May i ask when you bought yours Kam?
I only ask because he assured me things had changed and improved considerably, its a shame he couldn't post us a reply regarding that?
but thats aside, ignoring someone in trouble with a product of theirs is not good

Re: 16v Carb Mainfold and Twin 40's
as a road car, the 40's off the 1712cc 8v will work fine.
they are actually reduced internally using a choke venturi, brings them down to 36mm i think, but is designed to keep the airflow speed up so don't worry about thinking the reduction is a bad thing.
you can play about with them though, and up the size to 38 etc, all readily available from eurocarb etc
bigger carbs will still work to a point, by using the larger bodies, i.e. 45's, you can still achieve good airflow quantity and speed by using the venturi's again.

I'm pretty sure the standard alfa 1.7 boxer 40's came with 32mm chokes, but as shrew said air speed and all that.
I found a good article online that gave good rules of thumb on carb sizes and engine size, I will see if I can find it again.

Re: 16v Carb Mainfold and Twin 40's
Hi Justin, I had a reply from Di-michele and the only thing that they are willing to do on 2 sets of manifolds is to send them together thus saving on their delivery costs. This would obviously mean that you'd still need to resend one set to the other person at an additional cost.its_welshy wrote:Jube: I'm going to move ahead with the di-Michele manifold... So i'd say it's probably best for you go ahead and order a set for yourself as there's no real saving on buying 2 sets together.
