Possible?

Post by brussels »

Hi,

Was looking at possibility of buying a late 33 16v with power steering to switch into my late sprint.

Came across a cheap permanent 4, would the 4 wheel drive switch over too? That might be fun!

When I did the track sud with a 33 16V running gear I toyed with using the power steering but the main issue was the hole where the steering column goes through was much bigger for the 33 than the Sud provided.
Not sure if the Sprint has Sud one (most likely) or the bigger 33 one.
Of course it could be altered to suit if you felt the need.

Another option would be to fit electric power steering as RSFruitbat has done to his rally car..not a straightforward job either put given the lack of all the hydraulic gubbins needed not to mention the rack change it may be easier..

The 4WD system would be a much bigger job, the transmission tunnel would need a huge amount of work to allow the propshaft to get to the rear axle.

Chris actually did get a Sprint fitted out as a RWD one once and he had quite a task to get things altered..

A customer built a 4 wheel drive Sud a few years ago using 33 P4 parts, - successfully too - he used alot of the P4 parts, fuel tank, wiring, dash, heater, I don't know how much welding he had to do, apart from the rear axle radius arms, I know he welded mounting points for the the two short arms as they mount in front of the axle, not behind like a Sud does. The car was sold on Ebay, ended up in Ireland I think.
If anyone fancies doing this, I have just bought a complete P4 for breaking, - special deal for forum users....................
John.
