Magnets.
Magnets.
Recently read an article regarding placing magnets around the oil filter to collect metal particles that may pass through the element. Seeing as drain-plugs are no longer magnetic what do you peeps think? Bet Lauren has some info'.
Re: Magnets.
Sounds like I good idea .come on Lauren . What do you think

Re: Magnets.
I wouldn't know - we don't use reciprocating engines in space
I'm quite sure that sticking magnets on the oil filter case would attract ferrous metal debris, but wouldn't the filter strain that out anyway? Even if the filter was completely clogged the by-pass valve would only allow the contaminated oil to flow back to the sump.
My only worry would be the filter clogging with bits of metal if you put magnets around it. There again, if there was that much metal filings in the engine oil you would have more to worry about than just a clogged filter!
So yes, I suppose it would be an idea to collect a few filings in the filter, which could then be disposed of at an oil change.

Re: Magnets.
I'm in agreeance with Lauren on this one, seems a logical thing to do but in practicality would it solve anything/ Like the low oil pressure light, by the time it's on your engine is usually toast!
Why not ad a magnet to the sump plug?
That'd be the easier solution and would catch any filings before the oil pump had chance to chew them up..

So if you make the Kessla Run in under 13 parsecs would that help ?

Re: Magnets.
Update. Managed oil and filter change before the rain came, it turned out that my drain-plug is slightly magnetic but added a magnet to it and stuck two on the sump. Homer Simpson moment - don't run car off the blocks without removing drain-can first. DOH.
