Carpet underlay
Nowt do with your house. I'm removing the std (stuck on) sound deadening and that will be replaced with dynamat or similar but i was wondering what you're all using to replace the crappy standard Alfa hard backed black underlay (you know the stuff that stinks worse than your socks when it's been wet for 10 yrs). before you refit the carpets

Re: Carpet underlay
Well i was going the same lines as you were lou, dynamat or a cheaper, lightweight foam perhaps.
Not really needing a "sound deadening" quality to it personally, just something to stop the carpet sliding out of place and make it a tad more squidgy under foot!
Dynamat is a ruddy fortune afterall!

Re: Carpet underlay
Thanks guys. Shrew's right that if the carpet is put straight on top of the dynamat style stuff. It's going to feel a bit thin and naff . Just looking for something that pads the floor a bit to give the right feel under the carpet . I'll have a look at the Woolies site see if they do anything suitable

Re: Carpet underlay
I just binned the underlay, and didn't replace it.
It soaks up water, stinks, and makes the floor rust.

Re: Carpet underlay
Fair point Dave I remember having to remove or lift the carpets to repair suds when they were still plentiful and people just used them as everyday cars. And the stink that stuff made when it had been wet for any period was atrocious . I do however want the car to feel nice inside and so I think it needs some kind of padding between the carpet and the dynamat style pads.
I'm still a long way off needing it yet but I like to start researching and start sourcing this kind of stuff before I'm desperate

Re: Carpet underlay
Hi
Being in the flooring trade I used Foamalux carpet underlay, it has a dense crumb rubber backing onto a thick felted backing. This makes it easy to cut into place around the centre console tunnel etc, gives the sound deadening you desire as well as making the carpet keep its proper shape.
It also looks relatively similar to the original (except it doesnt have the hard backing)
There are various cheaper alternatives, but I would highly recommend.
Hope this helps

Re: Carpet underlay
Thanks Sudman. That sound like a good alternative . Is it readily available from any good carpet shops?

Re: Carpet underlay
Yes most shops will be able to order a roll or a good quality alternative, the rolls are normally around 10 square metre so you will have plenty to do your car
Re: Carpet underlay
That's a really good idea, bet it's way cheaper than the "proper" stuff and there'd be some offcuts to be had for a good drink I bet
