ENGINE TROLLEY Mk2

Hi all


no i'm not bored, or daft (well????)


heres the best use for a shopping trolley yet!


it has to be a certain type, with the lower spars, the kind that has the Wine Bottle rack under the main basket!



but this is Mk1 of my Engine Install/Removal/Transport trolley, specifically built around our lovely little boxers of course.


so far so good, a heavyweight 16v sits in there beautifully, and i was free to roam the countryside, making brum brum noises, pushing my engine along with me.

Sadly the first decent hill made me regret taking the escalator brakes off, but hey life is rarely perfect.


next phase will be to get it low enough to glide under a jacked/supported sud or 33 to assist with install and removal of the engines and box as a unit,
and i've got a nice Nardi steering wheel to replace the supermarket handles!

I dont do the pinching, just the recovery!

This one was spotted in a ditch at the edge of a playing field, potentially following a high speed incident, thereby leaving the footpath!

OK, so as now titled, we are at MK2 stage now.

i took the grinder to the trolley, and took a load of height out of the base by cutting the wheels off, moving the side rails down the legs, and rewelding the wheels back on without the step down.

i also cut the handles down, and laid them back before rewelding them in place at an angle and height that will allow it to get closer to the car that the engine is going in / coming out of.

the result is now that an engine sits much lower, but will in fact sit about 1.5" lower still on the final version, as its currently resting on the exhaust studs, so either the engine has to move up or down the trolley to avoid this fouling, or i modify the side rails to support the engine at a wider point than the rails currently allow.

the final version should be able to move any of our boxer engines around with ease, and make transplants and removals etc a damn sight easier, as anyone who has tried to budge a 16v will tell you, they are quite a lump.



I'm pretty sure you all think Grandmaster Nutbag of La La Land, but my spine won't take much more Capp'n!

and soon enough, you'll all want one! admit it, you're eyeing one up on the outer perimeter of your local asda right now aren't you?

Just one question Shrew

How do you get the jack out / in from under the engine or are you assuming that everybody has a hoist

if you don't have a hoist, you shouldn't be changing the engine and box!

in my opinion of course, but there's a tool for the job, and the hoist is it.

besides, i use my main jack to tip and hold the gearbox tail up to the mounts so there not stressing the rubber band mounts whilst bolting up, so its busy!


i couldn't make a version to suit everyone, as there are umpteen methods folk use for boxer engine removal/instalation, the oddest, but a great method that works for him very well, was Steve, Smusician, who hoists the engine and gearbox up high, drops the tail end of the box down to his inspection under the car, and lowers and levels as he goes.

I dare say the crossmember can stay in place that way, and keep the front end in one piece and in check, which is nice, but i imagine it looks very precarious when in action!

Take all the bolts out and let gravity do the hard work LOL

No TBH it's something I haven't done many times but did FMJ with the car about 2 feet off the ground - maybe not the best way though!!

Ever wondered about a pallet truck as these can be highered and lowered so act as the jack!!

Main problem is that they don't come free from Tesco or Sainsburys !!!!!

yeah ive often wondered about the pallet truck too, they'd do the low entry very well, but i don't see them lifting them high enough to start getting any bolts in place either, they do only have a shallow lift sadly.


oh, and yeah, you don't find them in the playgrounds and alleyways of nottingham either, good enough point really!
