Initial Settings For Dellorto DRLA

Post by Sudman »

Hi
Just got my Dellorto DRLA 36s back from vapour blasting and have replaced the gaskets etc. There seams to loads of conflicting advice on the Initial set up.
I'm familiar with Weber IDFs but can anyone advise me on a good base starting point for the idle mixture screws etc. For the dellortos
Thanks in advance

I would estimate between 1.5 and 2 turns out as a base starting point,

and a fair amount of attention on the balancing of the carb actuation on the linkages, it easily throws things out before you start otherwise :)

I've been reading that the starting point should be 3.5 - 4 turns, admittedly for vw engines. I'd started at 2.5 - 3 turns and just couldn't get it right - they are similar settings to Webers I will give them a try, thanks Shrew.

Yep, that's the Bob Tomlinson Dellorto book - excellent information, but as you say, focused on th VW beetle engines.

Like Shrew, I've always set mine to 2 turns to start with (DRLA 40s on a the 1.7 8v engine but should be the same for you). Also as Shrew says, pay careful attention to ensuring the butterflies on both carbs are completely synchronised via the linkage settings. Lastly make sure there is a very slight bit of slack on the take up of the throttle cable i.e. With the pedal released the cable is not acting on the butterflies and make sure it's adjusted to allow the butterflies to fully open on a full pedal depression. And make sure no choke is being applied anywhere.
From there I usually use a colortune to help fine tune the idle mixtures and a carb balancer to fine tune the carb syncing.

Mine just flew through the mot on emissions, so I must be doing something right :-)

Hope this helps.

Good advice guys thank you
Generally when I set my carbs I disconnect the linkage anyway, and because Ive changed the carbs from the webers that Id been running with the choke cables are also disconnected.
I also upgraded the original plastic fittings to proper metal ones so the linkage can be set as per the Haynes manual - I even use my vernier gauge to measure them !!!!

Thanks for your help

Yes,disconnecting the linkage fully can be a good way to start the process.

And you're right about the black plastic bits of the linkage. Been after some replacements myself - could you let me know where you got the steel ones from?

Cheers.

There are some for sale on eBay at the moment I think search under Alfa 33 and you should find them.
Sorry I know some people could do a link, but I'm not sure how to do that
