1.4 TB 170 bhp engine - tappety ?

Post by Veesix75 »

I heard a 20k mile Guilletta 1400 turbo petrol today and it sounded tappety / clacky on tick over from cold with bonnet up.

Anyone got one or heard one and did it sound similar?

Tinternet search brings up usual range of 'they all sound like that ' to the dome mongers quoting multi air failures due to incorrect oil and such like.

After driving diesels I expected it to be a quieter than it was, but then that doesn't mean it should be.

Thanks

I've got a 1.4 135bhp mito with 50000 miles and had from 30000 and it sounds very quiet even when cold it's full history and oil has always been 5w40 fully synthetic they don't hold much oil so if not checked it's easy for it to get low

Thanks. I read a post where someone said the selenia oils had to be used, but unless it has a special additive then its no different to any other quality brand 5/40 synthetic.

We are contracted to use Shell oil at work for the services, they list regular ECT 5w/40 which isn't overly special, not even in their Ultra range.
Think the dealers will just try and insist on Selinia to get the revenue back.

Would love to hear the guys at Opie oils opinions, Silkolene has always been a favourite of mine ever since we moved to Pro4 from Castrol which instantly eradicated cam wear problems we were having with the Rally car.

Yep. A friend worked for both Castrol and Silkolene and he was very honest about oil differences......as in so long as it's quality at the refining stage then it's mostly the same.

Silkolene being fuchs now.

Funnily enough I've always used castrol as said friend got it me at a good rate and the engine builder also used it.

The one mistake I made was going from a fully synth to a semi and that caused cam wear, something to do with residues in the buckets I think ?

Give the chaps at Opie a shout,

Thats what they're here for and will look after you a treat I'm sure.

Incidentally, i dont go in for all the liquid gold nonsense, most of it is manufacturers trying to tie you in to their brands and servicing i suspect, and underneath the labelling and marketing its oftwn nothing special anyway.

Race oils have a place for highly stressed engines, but other than that, a reasonable spec and brand and regularly changed, and flushed, has always been my practice.

Never had a failure or worn component's yet, even in my 13000rpm bike engine days!

Just my opinion of course, I'm sure there are many many others! :P
