speedo drives

Post by rsfruitbat »

Will a 33 speedo drive (electric) fit a Sud gearbox (mechanical) if you use the correct clocks for the speedo drive?
Or do you have to change the outpput shaft on the gearbox?

I discussed this some time back with Ferdi when he was fitting a replacement gearbox for me......but can't remember the exact details.
Give him a ring for full and proper info.
Google Ferdi's Garage for his number

Sud and 33 output shafts and flanges are different (obviously the 33 flange has no mount for a brake disc but is also 12mm longer). The Sud has a helical gear pattern to drive the speedo cable, the 33 has a toothed wheel for the electronic pick up. Secured with a clamped on nut, not a nut actually but it has an outer thread of something like M1x21 or 1.5x22, can't remember. I made a special puller to remove, in my case, the 33 toothed wheel to be replaced with a Sud mechanical wheel. Used a large nut intended for the Sud front wheel baring, made a cut in it and enlarged it 1mm so it could be screwed on the speedo wheel retainer. That was hard to type and probably to understand but I found the pictures...

That's an impressive bit of kit - the retaining collar is a press-fit onto the halfshaft and is used to retain the bearings. In the Haynes manual it is mis-labelled an "oil thrower" but the thread is RH on both sides so obviously would throw oil out on one side if that was its purpose. The thread is actually designed to fit the special puller tool used to get a purchase on it. I believe the same tools are used for Alfa transaxle cars, so you could try a specialist such as Alex Jupe if you don't fancy doing it yourself as Bert has done...

What i may want to do is go the other way.
I have a Sud gearbox and mechanical speedo drive. I could fit the 33 output shafts and a electric speedo drive, clocks etc as long as they go in as a package?
gearbox is a special and i dont really want it stripped down and rebuilt into 33 box.
thanks for advice.

If you have the brakes in the wheels no problem to change the shafts complete with housings.

That sounds like a plan - as long as the 33 halfshaft splines fit into the Sud diff, you can simply change the whole assembly over. It certainly works with Alfasud parts, I've replaced complete halfshaft assemblies before...
