Engine removal 'How to'?
Engine removal 'How to'?
Happy new year,
Is there a 'how to' on engine removal of a sprint engine? thought i would pull it out to do the service, belts, water pump etc. Never done it before to any car so would feel slightly more confident if there was a step by step guide.
Thanks!

Hi
You can do the belts and water pump in car . Bonnet off and radiator and grill out to make room

Thanks, will give that a go probably more within my abilities!
just pulled the spark plugs out, all are very wet but one has gunky stuff around where it screws in. Just running too rich or something else?

I've timed up my 16v boxer this way and taking out a water pump in the engine bay .Your proberly have to smash it out.as they corrod in the block.
Sounds like it could be running rich ?

Re: Engine removal 'How to'?
Plug condition really depends upon what the engine was last doing, ie if it had been idling for a couple of minutes then they may well be a bit sooty - if you had been running reasonably quickly for a few minutes then stopped and switched the engine off and pulled the plugs that gives a much better indication.brussels wrote:Thanks, will give that a go probably more within my abilities!

The gunky stuff may well be debris that collected in the head plug hole?
A Haynes Sud/Sprint Manual gives a good step by step guide for most servicing things.

Remember doing my 8v engine before I replaced it with the 16v . I had to smash the crap out of it . Result

Clearly you've not left it in long enough, you've changed it far too early Tony!

Well then you've got to drop it . Gearbox and engine in one .

Re: Engine removal 'How to'?
If you let me have your email address, I'll send you the full step by step process that I did and that worked very well. Also how to get it back in again nice and smoothly.
Re: Engine removal 'How to'?
Best to remove the water pump with the engine in the car. The forces required to loosen it would have the engine rolling around your garage floor. I use a big stilson wrench and a long lever. I've done 2 or 3 - for me the worst job on a 'sud, though experience made it much less painful the last time I did it
If you have inboard brakes, dissasemble them while the engine & gearbox are out - take the calipers apart and clean up the pistons and bores.
Consider changing the clutch too, very little extra work.

With the engine in the car....attatch a slide hammer to the water pump pulley.....the impact force is then in the right direction
