33 Strut and Sud Insert

Post by meridian84 »

Hi guys, wondering if anyone can help, my Sud has 33 front struts which are a sealed unit but I have a set of Sud gas inserts I'd really like to fit the strut with. My question is, is it easy enough to get the sealed unit internals out and replace with the insert? or indeed can it be done at all? Any help would be really appreciated.

This is the process I followed fitting Konis to Alfa 33 struts although I think it took a bit of persuasion to withdraw the guts of the old damper than shown here. Patience, the right tools, particularly a big vice makes all the difference.

Thanks heaps Adam, very helpful. So is it safe to assume the Sud and 33 strut tubes are the same inside diameter? I.e. the Sud insert will fit inside the 33 strut tube? The inserts i am using are Gabriel gas.

I think it's a tight fit, I once had to use a reamer to fit Sud Koni yellow in a 33 strut. The 33 strut is 40mm exact, the Sud a few tenth more. But it is a while ago and I could be mistaken.

I put the verniers across the outside of the strut the other day and around the insert at the same time, i think from memory there was about 7mm difference so i thought even given the thickness of the material of the strut, there should be plenty of room. Ah well only one way to find out for sure !!!
