Other Forums!

Post by jobeed »

Just joined another forum - what a joke.

I'm not on any others so have no experience and didn't realise just how good this was for the user interface!

Joined the droopsnoot as I wanted to find my dads old car. Couldn't even work out how to type a post let alone add the photo!

We are really lucky this forum works so well. Thanks to the hard work of the chaps!

Not alfa related but I'll attach the photo here as some of you will find it interesting - its not actually a droopsnoot, but I used to get taken to school in this when it wasn't being used as in the shot!

That is so cool. I always preferred the flat-front Firenzas and Magnums to the Droop Snoots, but you can't argue with the aerodynamics!

I don't drop in on the Droop Snoot forum as much as I should, but my old car now belongs to the Viva OC club chairman and he rarely uses it - too fast/much of a handful (delete as appropriate)!

I did wonder what this thread may be about....shouldn't have worried :D

The forum works simply because Shrew and myself got our heads together and worked hard to provide what we thought everyone wanted, then allowed things to develop in whatever direction the forum would take itself.
We were actually having a little chat about things last night when I dropped him some wheels off for refurb, how things are going etc and how we are financially. Most folks know Shrew and myself share the running costs so we can keep a reasonable amount of control and provide a forum where it can develop as it needs without members feeling like they have to get their monies worth, we have no plans for this to change in any way at all. The monthly costs aren't enormous really, easily manageable between us so no fears that anything will change.

As for the picture, looks like it's being used just how it should be :D

I have to agree with Kev on all those points, plus Jon on the user interface thing.

Many of the original members here are part of the mass defection from the Alfaowner site some time ago, and blimey if we didn't jump ship back then, i for one certainly wouldn't be on there at all now, for similar reasons to what you have found Jon.

I'm suspect the Droop Snoot forum may be awkward for different reasons, but the old AO forum is an advertising nightmare to negotiate!

Simply trying to find a lounge or forum area to read or post in is like playing high speed Scam Frogger! One wrong key or click and you find yourself ordering some Diet Plan or Mendurance Pils! :o

Oh wait, no, that could have been the "other" site i did want to order from!

LOL!

I have to agree, the DSG forum is difficult to navigate for completely different reasons!

It's run under Yuku, the only forum I have come across using this provider, and it just seems very clunky. Like Jobeed, it took me ages to figure out how to post images, and the low membership means its not the most dynamic forum out there, but I will occasionally drop by for a quick shufty, see it there are any more Basil von Rooyen "Little Chevs" in town :D

Lauren

PS - in my view CAF is the perfect combination of easy accessibility, ease of use, dynamic and above all no adverts (a Godsend for those of us with slow broadband connections). All thanks to Shrew and Kev :D

Hi, I agree with the above, I lose patience and interest very quickly with some forums and digging through stuff and adverts are an annoyance. I am very grateful to the gents who run this as becoming a member has saved me literally hundreds of pounds in parts and advice, helped me learn a lot more about my car, led to some laughs and to meeting some genuinely nice people.
That this is done by fellow enthusiasts and at their own costs is fantastic and shows how into these cars we all are.
I would however like to offer the following suggestion, it is only a suggestion and I don't want to rock the boat or make something that works well already more complex...
I used to belong to a smaller single model forum a few years back run along similar lines, they only made 4500 of said vehicle ... so always a limited gene pool, they funded the internet hosting/ web running costs/ maintenance along the following lines...
They ran a competition every two years to design a sticker (already discussed elsewhere on the forum) which was then professionally made up, these were really cool and owners "collected" them as new ones came out, the cost of one of these was £5 for the first one ("period" Fiat / Alfa stickers are about this on ebay anyway)and then cost from then on , which was about £1.50, this money went into the hosting etc so members didn't have to cough up themselves.
something like this could work, as it would be purely optional and if people didn't want to pay/ have a sticker that is up to them! Me, I would want one in both Alfas, so there is £6.50 and then £3 every two years after as well as the fun of the competition to design them. The sticker could have the website on as well so more people could access the site. Between member we have enough creative/ professional expertise to make this sort of thing happen.
Or just tell me to shut up and mind my own business!! :D ;) :o
