IMO, I would make a few changes to the site to encourage people to post more.

1) The forum is too big with too many categories, seen this on forums before, should start small with only a few categories and sub-categories to concentrate the posts, then the forum looks busier and makes people post in the same sections.
2) Change the setting for links, when someone clicks on a link, it should open a new tab on the browser, not navigate away from this site... I've often closed a webpage thinking it was opened as a new tab, only to lose this page too.

interesting post, glad to get your opinion mate.

we thrashed out the categories at the start, trying to get a balance between not spreading everything out but at the same time having a place for differing topics without them getting drowned by other threads.
not sure if it's worked out well for everyone but we are open to suggestion for change.

the links thing I have noticed myself that it doesn't open in a fresh window which means you have to back track all the time rather than just close down an opened tab, sometimes can be a pain if what you opened up has a few pages to view.
not sure what/how this can be rectified? ....shrew? :D

good constructive post though welshy ;)

Hi all

As Kev says, we did put quite a bit of thought into the layout and categories etc before much else, as much to come up with what we didn't want to end up like, mentioning no other horrid terrible forum sites, as much as what we did want to look like.

I personally think we have the categories and sub categories about right, but i'm all ears, if there's anything specific you want to suggest then maybe a thread in the site info section wouldn't be a bad idea, and we could get a general consensus on the feel of the site layout?

I have aleady had a look at the "links in new tab" thing, as i also have shut the whole site down accidentally when coming back from a picture link or crossed over to an external site etc etc, but sadly its a little beyond my finger bashing capabilities as its a code input rather than a settings change.

it is something i'd like to change, so i could do with our web guru on it, but i'll keep researching and it may just appear that way one day :P

Wasn't criticising, it's a cracking site.

It should be in the setting Shrew "Open links in new tab"

I know you love it here J, i didn't take any offence, welcome all idea's regardless, keep it coming.

My homework into the "open links in new tab" appeared to lead me to believe that the old version of PHPbb2 had that facility within the board settings, but this later PHPbb3 version has lost that facility due to them wanting all activity and events within the site to remain under the control and protection of the host server (i think thats right!) so they took the settings option away and it has to be returned by inputting and changing of program code itself, something that i don't feel comfortable or confident in doing myself no matter how many times i read articles on it,

I'd end up ruining the whole thing! :D

no offence taken at all mate, quite the opposite. it's nice to hear from constructive comments on how we can change to make things better rather than let things slide with a forum that people don't agree with.

know our views on the classifieds and sales side of things is what we wanted, here to help rather than be pigeon holed ;)
