76 sud tidy up and respray

Over the past couple of weeks iv started to get on with blue ti, a lot of you will remember it from ebay a few years back when it was advertised as a barn find. It was subsequently removed before the end of auction and re-advertised about a year later as a finished resto! Unfortunately it was a very poor job but the fact it was a 76 in a very rare colour and an extremely solid car convinced me to buy it as i knew i could do something with it!

First thing i did was take for a cheap respray to make it look presentable and see what popped up over the next few years Since then iv fitted new brakes and pipes, lights all round, lowering suspension and ronal A1 wheels, 1.7 engine and 1.5 box.

So forward 2-3yrs and sure enough a few bits have popped up along with the fact the cheap respray was exactly that, i decided it was time to get on and do the body work and paint! I found a few old repairs that were just filler and a couple of bits of rust bubbling through on the bonnet and drivers side door. I made some plates up and a friend of mine welded them in for me.

Iv had a week off work this week so iv managed to get a lot done, its all painted tonight just to leave for a couple of days to harden up before flatting off.

its an alfa 353 procida Blue, i love the colour

Looking smart!!! Blu Procida is indeed a rare colour for a TI, that colour you see more often on the Sud Berlina and Giardinetta. The Blu Possilipo colour is more common on a TI, you see it every once in a while. Yours is the only one I've seen in this colour. Keep it up and make us happy by keeping posting.

Thanks guys it is a lovely colour isn't it, id never seen it in the flesh before. I saw an identical car for sale in Australia a few years back when i was on the hunt for a S1 ti, thats the only other one iv seen, id be interested to know if there's any others in the UK?

I was going to have a day off today and go to my local classic show, seems the northern weather had other idea's so another day in the garage it was!!

A good de-grease round the engine bay, Radiator back in, Alternator on and with the help of a friend got all the panels back on the shell

Its ready to flat off now over the next few weekends, pretty chuffed with the finish, there's only a few small runs here and there and some dust particles mainly on the roof which'll flat out easily enough, just gonna have to be really careful not to go through on any edges which happened a few times on the white car. (Keith your a paint sprayer arn't you? id love to pick your brains sometime?) The rear quater repair is still slightly visable, the panel warped during welding of the plates into the rear side window bottom, what a bugger to get that repaired I asked Bob Wright over to help me do the quater panel and mask up and other that that its all my own work lol

Been a bloody long week ill be glad to get back to work haha

If I can help Col you only have to ask mate.
Did you use cellulose paint?
One tip I will suggest is putting masking tape on your sharp edges like the roof gutter and the moulding down the door pillars, as a mop can buff through the paint there really easily.
Another is if you plan to wet flat the whole car and polish it, lubricate the flatting paper with ordinary bar soap (cheap value is fine) with plenty of water. It helps prevent the paper clogging and scratching.
My quarters got buckled when I repaired them as well, you can't help it.

iv spent this weekend flatting and polishing the sud, its come up really nice its more or less ready to put back together!
Did anyone venture to NAD today? was it a good turnout?

Wow ! Col, you have been busy. Car is really coming along.
I came up to NAD and did a 250 mile round trip today and mine never missed a beat. Haven't checked the water yet but no dramas on the trip and M1 and M6 was solid coming home.
Took this photo for you, is this the same colour as yours?
Good turn out of cars, and met a few more CAF members.

Yean i think that car is the same colour as mine, thats Alan next to it, its a very rare injection version, i often bump into him at local shows he's a north yorks lad..

Been cracking on with it trying to get it sorted in good time so i can put some miles on it before MITCAR.

Unfortunately iv gone through on the edge of the door, iv blow it in tonight but am not sure ill be able to hide the fix, any suggestions? other than having to do the whole panel again for the sake of a 5mm edge

Hi Col, as long as you faded the paint out with thin coats, it should "melt" into the fresh paint ok.
I did notice the injection system on the car when I looked in the engine bay.
Didn't get to have a thorough look at all the cars in the show as I can never get away from mine !! When I went walk about , as soon as I went back to get our cool box from the boot, I got swamped again. Same thing when I went back to get the Hall entry tickets that I left in the car.

Am sure it'll be the same at MITCAR Keith, i for one will be all over it like a bad suit i actually put the paint on thick so i didn't rub through again when am flatting it off. Are you saying i should have put several layers of thin paint on each one getting slightly bigger area?

Ideally, yes. It helps the new paint melt into the old and helps stopping it edge back.
When it has cured don't flat it too hard (2000) and polish with fine compound. If it edges back, try thinner paint.

I think we need MITCAR to be a weekend event. I don't think I will see any other Italian cars other than the CAF stand !!

Thanks for the advice keith iv put another couple of light coats on tonight, hopefully it'll blend in ok! Started to put stuff back on it, i painted the side vents and rear spoiler in satin black so theyv gone back on along with the rear lights, badges and number plate. Its starting to look like a car again

Hope we get good weather for MITCAR, makes all the difference doesn't it. The last sud get together at MITCAR Chatsworth house was a cracking day This ones going to be even better with all these new suds on the scene

Loving the colour of your S1 Ti and all the effort you have been putting in to keep it in tip top condition.

I have only every seen a couple of examples of the S1 Ti in this lovely vibrant mid 70's colour. The one in the pic below was sold by a dealer in the Netherlands a couple of years ago and I think there may be another LHD one in Denmark. Is yours the only example of the model in this colour in the UK?

Really looking forward to seeing the rainbow of S1 Ti colours on forum members cars at MITCAR.

Had another busy week at work but managed to get a couple of hour a night on the car as well as a a good day today, just the doors to build up and give the front a good clean out iv put a good covering of seam sealer along the rear side window bottoms to hopefully stop the water getting in there, put some masking tape along first then built up the seam sealer before pull the tape off to leave an edge "bit of an experiment to put so much in there but am sure itll stop the water getting trapped in there as it does"

Can't help me self Keith, once i get started i have to crack on till its done lol I want it back on the road for when am off for a week next month I was fully intent on having the white one done in 6months but that turned into a bit more work than id anticipated haha
