Just a tip.
Just a tip.
We all know how to prepare our cars for winter (if we use them) but here's one for the summer to save the problem I had driving into a car display at Easter. OVERHEATING. The fan had obviously not kicked in since last summer/autumn and had semi siezed,Paul at MDZ freed it up for me and suggested this. Join two spade connectors to a short link wire. Link out the two wires from temperature sender = instant test. On the plus side I know now the dash warning light works.
Re: Just a tip.
Funny you should post this about the cooling fan.
One of the jobs I did this weekend was a rebuilt carb swap.
Got the car all back together and got her running and while setting things up she obviously got hot. Fan kicked in, out , in, out... etc etc. Then she spewed a header tank of water out. Now that would not be very clever in traffic.
Any ideas ??
Everything is new, radiator, water pump, thermostat and pressure cap (x2) and heater matrix and block was thoroughly flushed when put together. Never had a problem while driving in the past but this is the first time she sat running for a long time without moving. Could the fan be going around the wrong way ??

Re: Just a tip.
odd that mate.
check that the pipe from the top of the rad to the header tank isn't blocked, i've seen the inlet at the header tanks block up before and need an 1/8" drill running through the pipe hole to let the coolant circulate, and the air escape back to the tank.
also seen fans run wrong way which with the odd wiring on the early suds is entirely possible, just check that the fan pulls air through the rad from in front of the car, not tries to push it out from inside the hot engine bay.
check it by shorting the fan switch as tony suggests

Re: Just a tip.
Could it be that the sender is on its last legs?
Re: Just a tip.
Cheers guys, The sender on the rad was also replaced when the car was put together.
I will check the return pipe Kev and also see which way the wind blows.
These things are sent to try us eh !!
At least the new pads and carb are a big improvement .
Thanks.

Re: Just a tip.
What a Muppet !!
I have found out the hoses into the header tank were the wrong way around. Poor car has been running for the last two years with the heater take off trying to get into the header tank via the pressure cap release outlet.
She has obviously never got so hot before as I have done over 2,500 miles like that.
What a tw#t !!
Thanks for the pointers guys anyway.

Re: Just a tip.
lol, glad you've found the issue mate. easy to overlook the obvious when it's a full on rebuild so well done for tracing your steps

Re: Just a tip.
Update !!
Had the carb set up today and general tune up. During that time she chucked up some more water.
Tuner, Steve, got his temperature reader out and said not only is the fan running backwards (even though I never took it apart, so wiring was as fitted) the brand new fan sensor was playing up and not working properly as well.
Points had closed up a bit so no wonder she was running like a sack of sh#t
I have changed the fan wiring so she draws air in from outside rather than trying to push it out of the engine bay and I still need to change the sensor.
Good news is that she is running the best she has ever run.
Getting there

Re: Just a tip.
Not the 1st time a new part has failed and probably not the last. Well found.
