Does anyone have any experience of registering an old car?

Post by jobeed »

Hi, just looking for a bit of guidance if anyone can offer any please?

I wrote to the DVLA, to try and get a registration document for the shell I have based on the chassis No. They didn't have any record of that chassis no, so couldn't find a reg no. So can't give me a Reg doc. blah blah blah

So as I understand it I only have one option. Restore, get an MOT and insurance and then apply for a new registration Is this correct? If so it needs to have all period standard components, the correct engine size etc, is this correct, or is there an easier solution?

If anyone has been through this I would appreciate a point in the right direction please?

All the best

Jon

You will need a letter from a club staying when it was built

Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies, even with that though I would need to have it mot'd and insured before I could register it though is that correct?

The problem is I don't want to build it to standard spec, I plan to use a 1.7 8v, which was not available at the time so I am guessing they wouldn't give me a log book on that basis. Whereas if I can get a log book before I build it, I can then simply tell them I have swapped the engine for a more recent, bigger one. Do you get my point.

Also I would like to have a log book before I start work as if I can use it on the road it will affect a lot of my build choices.

If I build it up to the spec I want, could I ask for a Q plate? Do they still use those? I suppose that would at least virtually guarantee a reg doc, I'd have to go down the route of a Kit car registration I suppose. (It would be nice to have a period registration, but its not the end of the world If I don't).

Finally I am assuming the car had a registration number at some point, if I could track that down, presumably I could get a log book on that basis straight away, or would there be other complications there do you think?

Ive spoken to the DVLA and they can't really help at all, so any further pointers would be useful. I have been given one idea, that I'm going to investigate, but I need to do a bot of research on it, as technically Im not sure it is legit!

a guy tried to get a car registered a while back that he got from a scrapyard, trying to save one from the crusher and all.
but it'd been registered as scrap from the yard when it was brought in, so the DVLA would not put it back on the road. once it's been signed off as scrap then it can't go back on the road, at all. that was the message he got.
in the end a perfectly saveable sprint could never gain (legal) enrty back onto the road.

that was the big deal with the stupid scrappage scheme a couple of years ago when the government thought it'd be a good idea to get more kia's on the road instead of all the "old bangers"
perfectly good cars were scrapped and were unable to be bought back and put back on the road

i'm guessing yours being just a shell has long since lost it's own identity. once scrapped with DVLA then the details are destroyed as far as i know, hence why they can find no record of it.

afraid to say yours is only going to be of use as a shell to all intents and purposes, the original ID will never surface.

age related plates are used when a car is changed from a private plate, or an import. Q plates were done away with years ago.

As far as I know it's never been scrapped, don't know this for a fact, but I guess no one would scrap it and then not bother to weigh it in?

I quite like a challenge so will try to get to the bottom of it. I am guessing it was registered at some time before being taken of the road to race. And if it hasn't been taxed since 1983 the dvla don't have a record, but nor do they have a record of it being scrapped.

If I have any success ill let you know.

hope it works out for you. sorry if it sounded a bit defeatest before.
it is worth contacting italy, as has been suggested before.
at least you'd get a build date for it which may help with getting it found.
have you got the inner wing plate? or just going from the stamped bulkhead number?

send an email to marco at centrodocumentazione@alfaromeo.com with your chassis number and you should get the build date, sell date in UK, original colour and trim choice. should help a ittle with DVLA, may even get you an age related plate...

Just been thinking!

If anyone on this forum has acquired the id, could they let me know, send a coded pm! I don't want to create problems for anyone!

I'll post a pic of the car when I'm at my computer just in case!

Hi Kev JTD,

No problem, I know where your coming from, and I know it can be difficult if not impossible. Your first post actually made me think about possible implications for any one who might have used this id, believing it to have been destroyed. So if I can find out the Reg no before I contact the DVLA I will see if anyone on here happens to be using it! If they are don't panic, I'll sort something else out!

Hi Simonsud,

That may be of interest, but would like to look at the possibility of getting the original reg no. first if I can. What year is it and is it a 2dr just out of curiosity?
