Never had any of the niggles you mention on mine, it got tired at about 120k miles, but I caned it every day so to be expected.
Avon racing did a quick shift for the gear change, and I'd consider a 2 litre twin spark box if you do tweak it.
I think the 220bhp was achievable with just camshaft upgrades, but then you could invest in a AHM 3.5 conversion....
