Gearbox tail mount

Evening all,

Doing quite a bit of refurb whilst I’ve got the engine & box out. A couple of years ago I picked up a NOS gearbox tail bush - the big round one at the end.

So I’ve got the old one out ok and about to put the new one in and see that it is not just a straight hole - seems to be a ridge on one side of the hole but solid the other side. The old one had the ridge at the top which to me would wear much quicker against the tail mount bar, than the solid side …. So weird they’d design it like that. If I put the new one in with ridge at the bottom then to me the wear rate of the new mount will be much slower.
See pics of old and new compared.

So….. is there a particular way up the bush goes or it doesn’t really matter?

Cheers,

Ed

.......or split a bit of plastic pipe to fit over your existing bar?

Thanks Dave, yeah I was thinking of going for the larger diameter bar from sudshop but then I thought might as well use the new rubber mount I’ve got.

I guess if nobody thinks they have to be a certain way up, I guess I’ll just fit the new one with the ridge underneath and see how it goes.

It should be fitted with the “line” in the side of the rubber at the bottom i.e. the way it’s shown in your picture.
When refitting the engine I always adjust the height on the top bulkhead mount that it hangs from so that the bar in the rear mount just touches the top of the hole in that rubber bush you are replacing but not too much weight on it.

Thanks Gary, I’ll follow that advice. Seems odd though to design it that way, where the thin ridge is on the wearing side (as you can see from the wear on my old one - left rubber in pic), when installing it the other way around would have a much thicker solid section on the wearing side and therefore presumably wear less.
Still, I’m a stickler was originality, so will keep the “line” at the bottom.

Cheers again.
