Plastic Windows

Post by Spacenut »

Hi guys - a quick question about polycarbonate windows. I am planning on getting some side windows, headlight covers and a rear window made up in polycarbonate. I have an idea for opening side windows but for the plan to work I need a rebate to be present in the window aperture. I thought one way of doing this might be to have two windows cut from 2mm polycarbonate, one with the opening full-size and one slightly underside, then bonding the two sheets together using UV cure adhesive - effectively making a laminated side window.

I'm thinking stiffer (than an equivalent single thickness 4mm window), I can apply tint and obscuration banding between the laminate (like a real windscreen) and I get the rebate I need for the opening window concept. Nova side windows are (nearly) flat, so no curvature to be concerned about. Anyone know if this has been done before? Are there any downsides? The adhesive I was thinking of is UV stable and is water-clear, similar to the stuff they use for fixing windscreen chips. I know some of you are active racers with plenty of experience of plastic windows, I thought I would canvas a few opinions before making a fool of myself with Plastics 4 Performance :D

Thanks guys,

Lauren

Hi Lauren,
You can buy the 4mm sheet in clear or smoked quite cheaply. I would use a wood router to cut the rebate you need.

Thanks Simon. That sounds a lot more cost-effective that inventing a new type of laminated window :D

Hopefully I will have all of the window templates completed this weekend.

A bit old thread, but I'm curious about the outcome. I'm thinking of doing it also.

I didn't go for a rebate in the end, although I acknowledge that the result would have looked a lot more professional. Instead I have specified a "porthole" insert that has a raised centre corresponding to the diameter of the hole in the side window. The insert opens inwards and when closed sits flush with the side window. Both bronze tinted so shouldn't look too bad from the outside. P4P have made a former for the porthole insert and say that the glazing will be ready for delivery in the next couple of weeks.

If they turn out OK I will post some pictures.
