Morning chaps, looking at getting the 33 out of the garage soon for the coming summer and want to tackle a couple of small issues. My car is 93' 33 16v and the gear selection is pretty poor, hot or cold but gets very poor after periods in traffic. This is my first boxer engined Alfa and am wondering if they are all poor at this age or is there a common fault. I was going to initially give the box a flush out and treat to a good semi synth oil as this worked wonders with the change on my old 75. Is there any other common issues to look at while I'm at it? worn selector bushes, filters etc? Can't afford a full rebuild just yet, maybe next winter.

Changing the oil has helped others in the past . Plus as you've said . Check all the bushes too. Try and fern up everything . It's usually second gear that where's out first .As it's the fun gear

If the gear selection is poor, crunchy, stiff or notchy for every gear, then it sounds like a linkage and shifter issue.

Often worn mounts can play a part too, as you go to shift you move the box on sloppy mounts as much as you move the linkage itself.

As jb said, 2nd gear is normally first to suffer if its a synchros issue, but they can tire pretty quickly at all ages and mileage I'm afraid.

Replacement boxes are around, a little bit of a gamble, but can be useful for rebuild parts anyway, as new stuff is very limited now.

Cheers guys. not really crunchy like a syncro issue, more notchy and difficult to select 1st/2nd gears, almost like it's not going all the way in so most probably a linkage issue then. Does anyone have a Schematic drawing of any sort that shows the different components in the linkages?

BLS were fitting new gearlinkage bushes in brass as recently as 2015.
They are shut down now.
So, not sure if anyone has a source for these?

My sprint has this problem in second, grinds every time unless I am very gentle with it and lower the revs. (Odo reads 60k but cannot be verified)

Can you get the boxes reconditioned - anyone know a specialist?

Pretty standard for most sud/Sprint/33 with more than 40k on them - 2nd gear synchro is the first to go.

I had mine rebuilt by Dave at Rusper in West Sussex, UK. He was brought up servicing suds and sprints etc.

Did a great job and I've had nothing but a slick gearbox ever since.

Is rusher the name of the company? Quite a few when I google gearbox / rusher / West Sussex (all Crawley)
