Potentially I am the only one wondering about this particular topic, but it may very well be that others have the same or similar questions and issues. For me the windscreen of the Sud is a small mystery. Since a lot of knowledged people are available on this board I thought I would give it a try.
This is my current understanding;
- All S1 Suds till 1977 (all variants Berlina, TI, Sprint, Giardinetta) with bonded clear colour windscreen which used clips to fasten the chrome moulding.
- All S1 Suds from 1977 till the end of production in 1978 (all variants Berlina, TI & Giardinetta) with clear colour windscreen with rubber and glued chrome moulding (part number ??? rubber, part number ??? moulding).
- All S2 Suds from 1978 till 1980 (all variants Berlina, TI & Giardinetta) with clear colour windscreen (part number ???) with modified rubber without chrome moulding (part number 108681).
- All S3 Suds from 1980 till 1983 (all variants Berlina (clear or green), TI (green only)) with clear (part number 123412) or green coloured (part number 123421) windscreen with rubber without chrome moulding (part number 108681).
Questions;
1. If my understanding is correct that would mean that there are 3 different sizes of windscreens? 1 size for the bonded specification, 1 size for the ones with rubber and chrome moulding and 1 size for the ones with rubber without moulding? Or was the difference in width/height covered by different sizes of the rubbers and were the windscreens the same size?
2. In case of different sizes of the windscreens does anyone here know the sizes and part numbers?
3. Looking at the part catalogue of the S3 Sud (see picture below) it seems that the UK and Sweden had unique windscreens, what was the difference to the "normal" windscreens for these markets?
4. Does anyone here have a source for the different windscreens and rubbers and mouldings?
5. All Sud owners know that getting the windscreen out without cracks is very difficult, the most effective way is to cut the rubber, but then you're left without a rubber, anyone here with some good tips on how to get the windscreen out without cracking it and without cutting the rubber?
6. The same question for getting the windscreen in again?
Potentially if other members can post part numbers for the S1 & S2 Suds we can find out whether there are 3 different windscreens between these series or whether the specifications (size) of the windscreens were the same throughout the production lifetime and only colour differences existed?
There are many fantastic restorations ongoing and done on this board so potentially clarifying the windscreen specifications may save some other people a lot of hassle and broken windshields.
Cheers
