supplying places aren't supposed to sell them without the plate makers details on mate, loads of places on the web that don't bother with that detail

That's what I thought too - is there an exception for classic plates? I got Framptons to make mine up for me, raised white plastic characters on a black background (plus just the plastic characters to clip through the grille at the front) and there was no makers marks on them. There again, the law could have changed since 2008...

I like period plates - had a set of raised plastic ones made up for the Baccaruda too. Modern plates look... too modern somehow

i'd be technically in more hot water for using the black background ones lauren, not supposed to be fitted to cars manufactured before jan 1st '73....

Thanks Kev, that is interesting. I am curious to know how Lotus Europas fare against this test. The Europa was manufactured until 1974 with white characters on a black mesh radiator grille from the factory. Nose is too sloping for stick-on characters, and no room to mount vertical brackets - what do they do?

I see there is other weirdness afoot - apparently you cannot legally use Ferodo DS2500 brake compound on the road in any car registered after 1999... How do I know? I've just purchased a set of Ferodo DS2500 pads all-round

nothing in the mot checklist to look for makers names on plates lauren, a few guidlines for the border and any message on there, that's all.
for example there has to be space between the border/message and the numbers. so you couldn't have 11 on the reg plate and put a load of TTTT's under it touching the bottom of the 11 to make it look like a U

the makers name thing on the plate i believe comes from all plates are supposed to be traceable to where/who made them in case of cloning. to make plates or be supplied plates with your name on them (for example a car dealership) you need to be registered with DVLA or the makers name will be automatically put on them. as always there are numerous companies that are willing to ignore the rules..


didn't know that about the pads though, but begs the question....how would anyone tell? not like there's any checks an mot tester can do

Are you allowed to test your own car or is that "a bit naughty"?

you are allowed to test your own car tony, they basically say that if we're trusted to test any car then we should be trusted to do our own...official view from the ministry training fella

won't be doing it though mate, local garage will do it for me.
not doing tests at the moment since getting away from the vw's

today i sorted out a long list of the little jobs that i'd put off for ages, quite a productive day
finally managed to change the leaking reverse light switch. worried about how much oil had been lost, quite a puddle on the gravel where it's been parked. was gonna ask the mot guy to top it up for me but although it's less than a mile away i didn't want to risk it. topping up the gearbox oil is a pain, official! made up a bit of hose connected to a funnel and poured some in from above which worked out ok. as it turned out almost 1/2 a litre was needed so amazing how much a little dripping part can lose.

all wheels now on too.

decided to stick the number plates on with 3M tape rather than drill and screw them.

loads of other little jobs done so not a bad day

Looking very nice indeed!!! Something to be very proud of. Do you deliberately choose to have a black plastic licence plate light housing on your rear bumper or you simply couldn't find a metal chrome one?

I wonder if UK spec cars didn't have them.
My car, like Kev's and York Sud's car has a black one. I can not comment on the other two cars, but mine is metal.

I only have black plastic rear number plate light holders, ditto the front indicators. I did notice yours being stainless Kieth but didn't know if mine were meant to be like that or black.....immaterial really as all I have are black ones!

No Ti logo for the boot Tim, but it will have a nice new Alfa badge going on this weekend thanks again for that. Have also got to put the fabric Ti stickers on the rear 1/4 pillars

One thing I forgot to mention last night was that after having my undivided attention (refused a trip to Skeggy and all.... ) for the day it refused to start up when time to pack away came. Proper little strop. After the usual checks the brand new, hardly done any running ignition coil was deemed to be at fault. LT wiring/points etc functioning proeprly but coild producing no spark.
Took the coil back to the Lucas agaent today for them to test it only to be told they have no means of testing it! A Lucas agent/specialist!! Told it would need to be sent away to be tested...
Had no option but to buy a new one and await a refund once the coil was confirmed duff. Would have really liked to know for sure that it was at fault to be sure.
Of course new coil fitted tonight it sparked to life straight away...Fingers crossed.

When I locked the car up I wondered why I hadn't fitted the stainless sill covers....then realised it was becasue I hadn't yet fitted any seat belts.....or sorted out any!!

I must have 20 or more front belts now of varying buckle design so I sorted through the lot to find the best matching pair, as clean as possible, working order, and probably most importantly to have the shortest length buckle connector. Last set I put in VJM the stalks were a bit on the long side and you had the buckle connection against your hip, these are much shorter so should be OK.

Cleaned them all down now so they are drying out in the shed all strung out, glad it's still warm here

I think the ti's were fitted with black number plate surrounds as standard along with black side repeater rubbers. yours being the same year as mine 75\76 would have had the chrome ti logo on the boot instead of the ti quarter logo's. The other way round for 77/78

that tail pipe looks a bit long - do you think you will trim it back a bit when you get a moment?

almost ready for the tueasday mot now,
another afternoon of sorting out a few smaller jobs.
seat belts fitted, bit of a faff to get all the assorted fittings and spacers together for it but all in.
i've ordered lap belts for the rear, not the best solution but better than having none which is allowed mot wise due to the cars age.
new rear badge fitted, thanks tim
door cards secured now about the best they can be, not like better ones are often available
finally got around to fitting the rear quarter ti emblems....the debate about whether the car should have them or a boot ti badge is still ongoing, but i have these badges and don't have a boot one so an easy choice
some other trim bits fitted
lights and fluids checked
just a few bits to do tomorrow before the tuesday morning mot

oh, and found a few mins for bluesuit

Im sure tuesday will be fine, how dare they find anything on such a beauty, and in reality, what is there to find?

Im positive a rebuild to this depth, and by yourself, will have left nothing to chance, but i know you'll still be a tad nervy on the brake rollers and stuff! Ha ha!

tidied a few more bits up today, car is as ready as it's gonna be.

managed to fit a few more trim bits including the hand-brake lever cover. made up a couple of little brackets to hook the front end and a screw through the rear end which is how it had been fastened before so at least i wasn't making fresh holes in the plastic!

managed to drill into my thumb though which smarts a bit, pulled quite a bit of flesh out and leaked a bit..my own fault for not using a vice...

points, condensor & plugs changed so done all i can there without a CO machine at home.





fabric ti badges came with the car liam, they are probably old original ones judging by the age of the backing paper. i know steve parry had some made a few years back, might be worth asking him.
