hope this helps, col

hi col.

all indicator wires accounted for mate, this one defo isn't an indicator one despite being the same colour! alfa eh

there are many circuits that have the same blue/black trace wire to them as the power feed, all ignition fed stuff.

i have the whole loom out and in the shed so very easy to trace stuff along which helps. this wire in question runs from the engine bay, back to fuse 8 (ignition fed), across to the wiper motor, on to the heated rear window switch etc etc. goes on foreever.
i just can't figure out why/where it goes to under the bonnet. from the amount of slack it will be somewhere around the carb area......don't think it's been retro-fitted as was still crimped to the original connections and did actually also run down to the reverse light switch before going into engine bay

Hi Kev - a connection to the sonic idle cut-off valve is probably a good bet. The progressive Weber 40 DIR carb used this type of anti-dieseling valve, ignition controlled, but was this carb ever fitted to the S1 Ti? I know it was used on the S2 engines, because mine had one.

UK standard colour codes have blue allocated to the headlight circuit...

ah.

you could have confirmed this for me lauren.

i did wonder if it was for an idle/fuel cut-off valve for the carb but can find no such devise on the original or spare carb i have, plus nothing on the wiring diagrams.

we're not sure that the loom i have is from the original car, either that or the dash i have isn't.....loom has wiring for the heated window & hazards but the slots were never opened up for both.

it could just be that i have an S2 loom?

unless anyone knows if a different carb was fitted to the ti's?

i did kind of wonder if that's what the connection was for.

i can just chope it back out as won't be needed as far as i can see ;)

Hi Kev, why don't you just isolate it off and not chop it out. I have two wires that I could not account for when I put mine together.
The only place they led to seemed to be the location of the brake fluid reservoir, but I never had a cap with the sensor in it. Like yours, proper terminals on it, just nothing to connect it to.
What engine has your car got, is it the original one ?

Thanks Kev for the info about the windscreen chrome trim. Saved a lot of trouble working out the correct item and removed the risk of ordering the wrong thing.

that's the plan mate, just get rid of it altogether. just didn't want to get rid then find i needed it for something else! :D

I think you right about the TI badge on the bootlid - early cars did not have the stick on TI fabric badge on the outer C pillars and had a chrome TI on the bootlid - later cars were the other way round.

What I did find the other day when looking for the details about the lower suspension arm recall was a bulletin about the 1.3 TI series 1.

It seems that they had a chrome 1.3 badge fitted by the dealers to the right side of the bootlid - dated 11th August 1977 it gives a template of where to drill the holes - also says about ""removing an adhesive label from the right side of the bootlid should this be fitted" so maybe they came with a stick on badge and Alfa GB wanted a chrome badge - the badge must have fitted on another model as well as it has a "Nord" type part number 115095639972 - good way to add another place from them to rust from by having the dealers drill holes !

With your wire mystery I thought only the series 2 cars onwards had the cut off solenoid on the carb and it was a blue/white wire that then had the white plastic cover that clips over the connection like the wire that goes to the cooling fan wire

I guess you have the same wiring diagram that shows 3 blue/black wires coming off of fuse 8 ? None of the diagrams I can find for series 1 cars (5M,Super ,TI or Sprint) show a carb solenoid

yes, cheers gary. i can only put the wire down to an anomaly for which i have been unable to find a home....

once the car is nearer fully completed wiring wise and i can be 100% sure it's not needed then i will remove the wire at the fusebox and chop it back within the loom.

the rear boot badge does seem to be a puzzler. i have new rear 1/4 panel stick on badges so will just use those ;)

chris, there are some gaps but at the moment i've been limited to solving a few parts issues, getting stuff ready for fitting etc.

you'll be glad to hear that some big steps should be done by the weekend ;)

as i had a couple of days spare with it being half term week (planned a few days out but rob was working yetserday & today, seems very odd to say) i have finally re-united the wiring loom with the car

first off though a few more wiring issues to sort out in the car, the ignition switch wiring was ready to short out and cause a fire, seem to remember VJM had a similar issue!!

few more connections to make good then sort out which loom section went where. eventually it all sorted itself out.

the heater box went in next complete with the new duct pipe, cheers again john ;)

this allowed the dashboard to finally go back in place.

all lights were re-connected, new earth links made for the headlights and hey presto stuff actually worked!

bled all the brakes through which thankfully got a good pedal, my handy work on the master cylinder wasn't in vain it seems :)

today i fitted the new rad complete with the refurbished fan & housing. had a huge box of sud pipes to sort through to find the correct heater and smaller connection pipes, all pretty much different to the twin carb cars so glad to eventually find all the ones i needed. cleaned and fitted with new hose clips, almost ready....

new centre exhaust scetion that i had bought the other week was next job. shame it was a poor fit! needed a bit more of a bend so it sat better to the floor without being under strain but worst thing was the hanger near the back box join which had been welded facing down, not up! probably why it was new old stock, chances are it'd been sent back a few times in its' life!
good job the grinder and welder were to hand, 10 mins chopping and welding saw it fit for purpose.
one with the back box which was fine if it does seem to stick out a little, may well chop a few inches off it, or roll the end.

tested the rad fan by earthing the fan switch....nothing :?
surely something hadn't gone wrong? i'd tested all this while the loom was in the shed..
checked the connections at the relay and had no continuity between the relay and motor, or switch
bloody odd that, bugger. loom will have to be dragged out..

bit of head scratching before i realsied i was looiking at the wrong relay!

when i tested the correct relay, things looked better. once i'd turned the ignition on.....numpty! :D

fitted the new igntion coil and a choke cable, time to try it

glad to say that the car started a treat. doesn't sound bad at all, settling in nicely 8-)

once warmed up and a couple of dribbly water joins were sorted i drained the cooling system so any debris would be flushed out.
refilled with anti-freeze mix which given the metal expansion tank is really a must to stop it rusting inside out!

after starting up i also found a blow on the exhaust front pipe, the weld was in-complete around the heat riser mounting point!
out with the welder after taking this short vid, only on my mobile so pic/sound is a bit crappy

She's a honey!! :) looks about there mate except for interior......
Now, on the subject of radiators....., are they all the same sud & 33? I seem to remember we talked about this before on that other site.... I know there are some differences on thicknesses etc. but are they all externally the same so will 33 rad fit a sud etc. I seem to remember there was a difference (maybe width?) but not 100% sure do you know Kev?

33 ones won't fit mate, they mount in a different place underneath at the cross-member bit.
new ones are still available but they are slightly different to the early ones like ours...

the bottom outlet on my new one is angled, the original comes straight out. is actually a better design on the angled one as it steers clear of the cam-belt housing, the original nearly rubs on the edge of the housing. in fact with the lack of any side stabilisor on these early cars the engine could well rock a little more and rub..

the other difference is the mounting for the fan. on the later ones the bottom part is located in a slot, the early ones are on by 4 bolts. easy enough to adapt to fit the metal housing though.

saying all that though......

this is the one i bought, nissens are a decent brand of rad makers. does actually state that it fits the 33 too, so maybe the one i was compairing it to was a 16V rad? know i've seen the differnces side by side and was probably when i did that 16V recently....

Understandable for 16v ones to be different I guess having a different front crossmember etc. I would usually just look in a parts book but as I don't deal in radiators and never have I have no books.... I do have a NOS Alfasud one, unsure if the pipe is straight or angled, I was looking into picking another one up off ebay as there are a few on there currently, ....well, once you have managed to find them after pages of wiper blades, oils and stick on mirrors in the search!

Can't see me needing one this year?

Your are nearly there Kev, every credit to you fella,
especially on your drive with no garage,

Looking good

Kev

does yours have the seperate voltage control unit for the alternator? or do you have a later type alternator fitted?
As for the exhaust, sound like you have a 33 rear box, like mine, I carfully cut the excess off, after measuring a Sud 1.
Great looking car.

cheers guys.

the driveway rebuild bit of it is by far the hardest part. long term jobs have to be planned, can't just leave it for next time...as well as the cold/wind/rain etc.

mind you, if i had a garage i'd spend too much time doing more of them :D

i do have a sepearte voltage regulator rather than an inbuilt one, know i could swap it all for the modern way of doing things but i'd like to keep a bit of originality about it. will be taking both components to teh local auto electrical place this week for a refurb.

cheers for looking for that wire col, glad you didn't find one really. confirms what i think, that i don't need it at all! :)
