a few more bits and bobs done this afternoon, silverstone motogp to keep me indoors for the morning......any excuse, eh!

fitted the exhaust front pipe, partly to get it out of my way in the shed and partly to tick another job off the "to do" list

connected all the fuel lines up, filter in the lines etc.

went to fit the new radiator then couldn't find the rad fan switch which i know i have somewhere......looked for the rad hoses then realised the top hose is different on single carb engines to the twin carb ones i have.....that's another 2 bits to find from the parts stash!

found out where (i think) the coil sits so fitted the new one, connected all the wiring up so it was ready to start, apart from the lack of any coolant!

spun it over to check for oil pressure light going off with the spark plugs out, no probs.

john tuwhich was good timing as we got no spark when trying to start it.

checked a few things out and eventually got a spark. tried again and she fired up instantly. even happy enough to tick-over despite not having a choke connected. didn't run it long at all as no coolant in, but long enough to hear and see there are no major issues

spent the rest of the afternoon into early evening (aren't nights getting dark early now ) trying to sort through the remaining electrical connections. just about got everything in order now so almost ready to take the loom out again for cleaning & wrapping in loom tape.

i'll be happy when it does run under its' own steam though to save pushing & pulling it about

single carb cars are a little more in need of choke tony, twin carb cars can manage just fine without it. if i only use it when it's warm and dry then i will also probably be fine

did a bit more this afternoon

made up all the brake lines and fitted those.
remembered in the course of that though that i hadn't fitted the rear calipers so they went on with the new pads.

whilst under there i also fitted the rod and linkage for the brake compensator, once i'd figured out where it all went!
had to take some bits off and move things to make room but it's on now. never had one before so will be interested to see if it makes any odds??

new flexi hoses too, so should all work ok.....

The compensator is supposed to change the brake bias when the car is heavily loaded - the rear axle compresses and actuates the valve. Normally though the car is driven lightly loaded, so the bias is shifted towards the front to stop the rear brakes locking up under heavy braking.

I think the valves tend to sieze up in this forward-biased state, so nobody really notices if they are working or not - if the car is heavily loaded and the bias is still towards the front, you would simply have slightly less efficient rear brakes...

I'm hoping to finish my rear brakes in a similar manner to yours - nearly cleaned up one so far!

nothing at all done on the sud this weekend, 147 needed new suspension desperately to stop the knocking noises, subframe off job as loads needed doing.

did manage to get down to the stash yesterday afternoon though to find a couple more needed parts. didn't find the airvent i need although we now think i already may have taken it a while back, a trip into the loft is in order i feel

miraculous find in a dusty old cardboard box though was the other broken half of the perspex full width sunvisor for the webasto sunroof. just got to stick it all back togther now, anyone got any tips on a good strong, invisible glue for perspex??

we also brought back the original radiator from the car, not for the rad itself although i guess it could be re-cored, but for the rad fan with the correct metal casing rather then the later plastic ones i have.

motor works which is nice, will strip it a bit more to give it some lube inside before a coat of paint.
blades are free from breaks so will clean up well.

cowling was dusty and pretty rusty but thankfully only surface rust, no perforations. attacked it with the knotted wheel and a drill powered smaller wire bit for the tight sections.

a coat or 2 of etch primer went on then will leave it until tomorrow night for the solvents to evaporate properly.


bet the neighbours thought they'd escaped the evenigs of me in the back garden with a grinder going

painted the rear springs, well another set that is.
the ones i have already fitted to the car are too short!
they fall out of place when the car is jacked up, and the ride height a the rear is too low despite the car ebing emptyish, we think they may be sport/lowered springs

finished the ran fan off too. took an age to get the fan blades clean, years of grease and dust took some soaking to get clean.

weekend free from doing a lot more as bsb etc to keep me amused, given up any small hope of the car being done this season now anyway so will take my time a bit more

Nice work mate, yes I agree no point rushing now, it will so be winter, getting dark early and frosts I understand about the springs, I have a set -35mm that I was going to use on mine but it all depends how they look on the car really, a lot of the photos of standard cars back in the day make the cars look a bit too high at the front but about right at the back I think

yes, think i must have a similar set of springs mate.
car sits as low as i'd want it ever to be at the rear with these springs on, that's without any interior etc to sit it down any more.
i'll fit these taller springs and see what it's like when the car gets built up.
not all the world to change so no big deal.

you're bang on about the nights pulling in now though, dark by half 7 now isn't it
won't be long before the frosts come

Good work kev that will be a really nice sud when finished look forward to seeing it next year at a show .If I didn't have my car I would love a series 1 ti.

I am new to this site so only been a member since Friday.
I have spent the last four hours going through your thread and loved it.
I so wish I had got on here sooner.
I am trying to get to grips with who you all are, but I am getting familiar with some names.
My thread on my Series 1 resto is on "the other" site, you may be one of the watchers. I wish I could have joined in with helping sorting some of your queries,
stainless window uprights, black or body colour 1/4 vents, sun visor anchors and just general support.
Car is looking superb and will look great when finished.
Mine took me six years, and has been on the road a year and a half. Still sorting a few things but what a buzz I get when out in her. She is off to hibernate now as she is only taxed till the end of the month.
Sorry to hijack and waffle, I will keep an eye on your site.
