just sorting through a few bits and bobs for the next stages of the build.
peddle box i picked up out of the stock is the wrong one, no accelerator pedal mount on it. no worries, will collect another next time i'm up there.
had a call from tom this week, gearbox appears to be in good health but i've asked him to give it the works, change anything that needs doing.
with that in mind i had a look at the clutch that's on the engine.
doesn't look bad condition wise, measured well within wear limts so could be used.
compared it against a good spare i have which was actually slightly better wear wise.
but, the one with the engine is a 180mm diameter
my spare is the more normal 200mm diameter.
so the question is, less mass of the original diameter to keep it rev happy (marginal diference, i know), or bigger diameter for longer lasting/more resistance to slip
What engines going in this Kev, original 1186cc or going bigger.... if staying at 1186cc I would stay with the STD clutch as it will cope with the 60 odd HP no problem and 180mm clutch components are cheap and plentiful on e-bay currently as they only fit 1.2 & 1.3 engines.
If you are planning on the standard engine are you 100% sure you want to stay with it mate, its a bit of a gutless thing even back in the day, I am keeping my 1186cc and associated bits and bobs in-case values go through the roof but I have a 1.7 solid lifter engine to go in mine coupled to a 1.5 g/box.
You are at the best bit of any rebuild for sure..... patience is needed though as you say......

yes, will be using the original 1186cc engine for originality.
the original engine even.
i have both clutches available from in the shed, in good condition.
i have no plans at all to change to a bigger engine mate, but if i did then i'd look at it again. think i will stick with the 180mm one.

I think you will enjoy keeping the 1186cc engine Kev - they are a nice revvy unit and even in SC form were good enough to get the Sud to at least 90mph...and the South Yorkshire police confirmed that to me on the M1 late one evening

You can get up to 100MPH in a 1186cc Sud. Well, with a slight slope and the wind behind you. The trouble is then, that the door windows and frame start to bend out.

lol.
i look forward to trying to crack the ton
nothing much done this weekend.
had a ride out yesterday with john to collect his new 147, had the pleasure of driving his 75 V6 back across snake pass

not a bad afternoon
chilling out this morning watching all motogp classes, washed the 147, generally relaxed a bit.
then decided i'd pull the sud out and fit out the doors, put the windows, regulators etc in.
into the loft to bring the glass down, knew i'd got some left over from the S3 cars.
boy does it get hot in the loft on a sunny day
realised then when offering it up to the car that depsite the grime and dust i could see a big problem. the rear side windows are clear and the S3 ones had a green tint to them
quick call to J and we went up for a look in the stores, found one. then thoguth i'd probably gone a bit senile and had already brought the correct ones home and stashed them away.
back into the loft....no windows
so i need a clear drivers window adding to the list of parts needed.
must soon make a list

Even the best Sud brain can make a mistake, sorry Kev had to chuckle at that. If you write your list on plain white paper keep it in the loft behind the S3 glass then you'll easily see the green tint. (tongue in cheek).

Too true and if the road is long and straight enough they'll hit 100, mine didn't need a down hill but mine didn't like a standing start.

very busy weekend with the bank holiday and all, alfa mending but not my sud.
did get chance to do a little this afternoon though.
passenger side window and 1/4 window in place now.
made sure that some new plastic lining was installed first between the inner door skin and the window regulator etc, vital to stop the water that falls between the weather strip and window falling ontothe inside of the door card. far too many door cards go warped because of damp on the inside of them. helps to stop draughts too
few other bits and bobs done, peddle box being refurbed etc. nothing exciting.

Looks good mate, another job or 2 done....
What wheels are you putting on the car? the multispoke alloys as in the picture or are they just slave wheels to make it a rolling shell...

the wheels that are on it now are just rollers, as you say.
the original steel ti rims ave already been refurbed by shrew, awaiting me to get my hand in my pocket again to get some tyres
silver ones from shrews pix, can't believe i haven't taken any yet

The steel wheels on early series 1 Ti,s sold in the UK were light grey. I know the early brochures showed an early left hand drive car with silver wheels but both my cars have light grey steel wheels and I never saw a right hand drive car which originally had silver wheels. But you can of course paint them any colour you want.

There was also a choice of different j width, visible, only just, from a little extra dish and offset on the outer face.
But what wheels were fitted to what cars is a little more about how the customer wanted it to leave the showroom more than alfa's build list i think, and certainly some of kevs wheels were a positive silver colour which appeared to be their original paint from the age and condition of it.
I've seen the light grey coloured wheels before, in fact i think they'll be like the ones Yorksud has refurbished for on his Ti, but i have to say they look quite a lot like the "essential" paint covering that the spare steel wheels had.
Originalilty is somewhat debatable unless you saw it pulling away from the Forecourt i reckon, pretty much as it always has been with the italian marques!

Yes grey is the original colour on mine which is an early 1976 built car, I have seen them silver on 1977 cars though so not sure when the colour changed. Mine however are 4.5J x 13" so again at some point they went wider to 5J (not a bad thing as the 4.5j wheels I have limit tyre width TBH). The wheels are usually stamped on the rim with size and month/year of manufacture

another steady weekend, a few little jobs done.
peddle box has been an ongoing refurbish job. brake and clutch master cylinders were stripped, new seals bought, inner bores honed, greased and re-assembled then painted.
pedals were removed, cleaned, painted and re-assembled with fresh grease.
servo likewise.
the rest of the steering column was removed, cleaned and painted. trying to get things installed in a condition where they can stay fitted now.
made a new gasket from neoprene and installed it with a smear of rubber grease, that should keep any water out.
finally got round to fitting the bonnet stay too. had refurbed one a few weeks back but when i went to fit it it was for the wrong side
whilst the mood was good, not to mention the weather suitable, i cleaned and painted the metal header tank.
thankfully once stripped it looks in good condition, time will tell.....

Superb work sir!
I particularly like the header tank - so much nicer to look at than murky brown plastic

The header tank is metal then Kev. Would that fit a S3 or are they as rare as rocking horse poo?

Metal header tank? Well you learn something new, must be peculiar to the early ones as even my old S reg 5m had plastic.

with the weekends antics with 2 tone the S1 car is feeling left out.
not to worry, i spoke to BLS tom this week and the gearbox will be ready for collection next week so it won't be too long before the car gains it's powerplant back in place for the first time in a few years.
will start to feel more like progress being made then

picked up a couple of gearbox tail housings this afternoon while dropping off 2 tone, thought i'd better clean and paint them so they are ready for when the drivetrain goes back in.
gearstick itself will be sprayed gloss black as it's inside the car, the rest had to make do with my brush marks and some thick paint

looking nice as usual.
is your early talibox unit one of the solid mounts or still bushed?
