got a few minutes today to try the new wheels on the 33 that i quickly painted up a while back.
was aiming to fit them all but it seems i overlooked the difference in spigot size between the 33 & 155 so need to ream a tad off the wheels. one did fit though just to see how they look, opinions?

under-bonnet looks tidy still, not seen under there for a year or so since doing the engine rebuild

Wheels look nice on that car!

155 Speedlines look bloody good on most cars, they're njust that classic 5 spoke style that works no matter what in my opinion,

and yes, they look fab on a 33, really suit an angular car i reckon.

the 58.1 and 58.6 centre bore has never been written as a hard and fast rule. Its so close, i've had wheels that shouldn't fit that do and should that don't, just a little thick on paint, bit of flash rust dust on the hub nose, a few n and offs of wheels, and it all soon changes from the maths!

took a carbide burr to the wheels to get the fit right, aided by a spare hub in the shed to check for a nice tight fit, handy having all these bits & bobs lying around

realised last week that i needed more long wheel bolts as only found 7 in the shed, luckily the parts stash at the workshop had plenty. painted a set of 16 up so they looked better.

i had previously painted the centre caps the same as the wheels but i thought they looked too dark and got lost in the darkness. so i tried the ones from the original wheels which i think look better, so i've fitted them

had a look over a few little jobs, tightenned the fan belt (has anyone else noticed that we used to have to do that regulalrly but with modern cars using multi-rib belts and tensioners that little sunday job has gone ....) , checked the levels, oiled the heater control cable (it will be changed for a good spare one in due course...) and generally had a look around the car to see what it will need.
the passenger door bottom now has a hole, drivers rear not far behind. bonnet will need a few dents repairing but not too bad otherwise. lacquer peel in most places, or paint fade where not!
the whole car will get stripped back and repaired where neccesary this coming winter and given a fresh coat of red paint should see it look as good on top as it is underneath.

i'll give it a machine polish in the days before spring alfa day at duxford so it will at least have some shine to it

i always think darker wheels only suit certain colours of cars, red being the best one.
other than that i prefer standard fit rims but in this case i'm happy with the look

33 has decided to have a little moment.

went to work in it yesterday and all was well, idle speed increased a little in trafic which i noticed to be a bit odd. thinking maybe an air leak but found nothing when parked up at work.
went home at night and all fine.

in the evening we went out in it to see robs' potential new, first, car and all ok.
then when we came to leave after it being parked up for about half an hour it stuttered a bit initially which turned into a full on HUGE flat spot below 2,000rpm and a full on reluctance to idle at all.
only about 10 miles from home so limped home ok using plenty of revs which it loved

no time ot dayligth to check it out last night

tonight i had a better look at all the vac pipes from the throttle bodies and they all seemed fine, all connections where they should be, nothing untoward anywhere.
car of course started up fine and ran well.
took it for a blast along some quiet country lanes and no issues, idle speed a bit erratic at times but nothing else to report. clue there i thought..

to repeat the conditions of last night i parked up at home for half an hour then tried again.
idled reasonable so off we went.
instantly the massive flat spot was back. seems heat soak when parked creating some issues.
checked a few things and nothing leaking so unplugged the suspect idle control valve which to my surprise the car kept idling without issue albeit at about 1300rpm. went for a drive and the flat spot had gone. stopped and plugged it back in, flat spot back. unplugged again, gone.
at least the issue has been found.

so i now am faced with either cleaning the control valve out and seeing what good that does or getting another one.

either way i'm in no way sure about driving it to duxford on sunday, a breakdown with the family on board will be very hard to live down!

My fan was running backwards and I am stumped as to why. I never touched the wiring, only checked it worked. The fan sensor in the new radiator was also new, and guess what? It is faulty. So need to change that again.
Fettling is never ending ??

did a bit more to the 33 today and am sure the idle valve is at fault, was a couple of other issues that i'd overlooked since when the engine was refitted after the install so sorted those.
the 33 will be staying home though, 147 will get us there without the risk of the 33 having another moment and giving me grief with the family on board....

the fan wiring is an odd arrangement, all coming back to me now.
rather than the traditional way of power going to the fan switch, then onto the fan which has it's own earth alfa thought about making it over complicated!
on mine the rad switch has no power to it, it merely acts as a switch to provide an earth for a relay which then in turns sends power to the fan. instead of having the one switch they've made it have 2! twice the opportunity for issues. you could have a perfectly working fan switch but if the relay goes faulty it'll not send power to the motor!

saying all this though.....have i checked mine spins the right way

not done much at all with the poor old 33 of late, just sits on the roadside looking forgotten

cleared out a lot of stuff this afternoon from johns' unit to my own, we came across this nice momo wheel though which should smarten up the old girl a little.....just need to find a few mins to fit it

given it a clean up to rid all the dust, will give it some leather food once it's on.

had to repair the horn wiring, thumb presses worked in the top spokes but the badge didn't
all sorted now
with a bit of spare time tonight and the weather ok i fitted it on.
must say the feel is better over the original which felt a bit thin, this momo one has a much chunkier feel

Kev, I had the same steering wheel in my 75 Twin Spark and then put it into a 164 TS. Lovely to use and really set off the interior nicely.
