Shocks for a 88 sprint

Post by brussels »

Seems like loads of confusing info out there, sites offer fronts not rears, obscure makes i've never heard of - rebuild this and that.

Can anybody clear up which new shocks (front and rear) are suitable for a late sprint, sporty adjustable or standard - and where to buy them.

Thanks

I got mine - ages ago - on Italian eBay for a song. Do a search on Ammortizzatori Alfa 33 or Sprint or Sud or Arna.

To be honest no idea, I believe they are the standard units. Is there an easy way to check?

They are probably spica on the front. If so you will need some koni inserts which are hard to get hold of. The rear shocks are still pretty easy to get.

Rears would be good for a 1984 Sud too?
I couldn't find any reasonably priced ones last time I looked....

I think I paid £100 each, or some where close to that.

If GAZ don't come back to you let me know and I will contact them. Does yours have the Sud or 33 running gear?
For the fronts I had to send them some old struts and they built the furniture onto one of their units.

Gaz said they did not make them. Mine is the later sprint compatible with the 33. It’s a 1988 1.7.

If yours is a late Sprint with outboard front discs, and rear drums.......its the same as the 83-89 Alfa 33.

So, try searching Alfa 33 Shock absorbers on ebay?

Do you want to keep it on standard springs or prepared to go coilover?
They may not list them but I know they have helped me when I have phoned and spoke to them.

I got some second hand front koni inserts from John at JustSuds along with some already converted front struts to accept them. Then I had Shaun Pickering at S.P suspension refurb the front inserts. I then managed to get some brand new rear koni shocks from somewhere....i’ll have to have look back in my receipts to find out who (I’m on holiday at the moment)....I think it was the Alfashop (but it was a few years ago now). I also got a full set of polybushes from the too.

Your vehicle will be identical to mine Brussels, so I can give you part numbers when I get back from holiday.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Alfastrut, that certainly looks like them (I’ll check the numbers when I get back, but of course they may have released a newer version). If you have found them on eBay, that’s a star find as they were difficult to find some years back.

Brussels, if you’re not brave enough to chop up your own struts (I wasn’t :-) ), just get an old pair from JustSuds and chop them up. You basically cut to top lip off, remove all the inners and drill a hole in the bottom for the bolt to retain the insert inside the strut.

The konis are for series 3 33, 1990 - 1994, but will fit if you use series 3 top mounts, the diameter of the top end of the damper rod is smaller than your Sprint, - and series 2 33 ones - and will be a very poor fit into the rubber mount. However, series 3 top mounts are the same 4 bolt pattern and should work fine. If you need Boge bodies and top mounts I have some ! Koni part no.s for your Sprint are 86- 2417 for Boge units, or 86-2303 for Spica - these also fit Suds with Spica legs.
Cheers, John.

I don't have any Sud rear shocks at the moment, - but Spax do Sud rear shocks, you can buy directly off them.
