SOLD : Alfa 33 1.5 TDR turbo system

Post by JetJackson »

Offered here is *most* of the turbo system from the early 80's limited edition Alfa 33 Turbo.

From what I remember...

In the early 1980s ahead of the release of the 1.7 engine Alfa Romeo UK commissioned a limited run of (50?) 1.5 Alfa 33 cars to be fitted with a turbo charger. The system was designed and built by Terry Drury Racing and was added to standard 1.5 SC cars. These were then sold by Alfa Dealerships around the country. The claim was 130+ bhp, 130 mph, 8.4s to 60. As far as know the engines remained standard internally. The carb was rejeted and an intercooler was fitted in front of the radiator behind the grill.

I came across (the remains) of one of these cars in the early 1990's. At the time it was too rusty to save (but probably quite good compared to what we save now) so I removed the engine and TDR system and fitted it to a 'sud. It spent a short time in there before plans changed and it had an incident with a nut... Whilst hacking round the farm one of bolts that held on the air cleaner came off and was sucked into the turbo, damaging it (see photos). I didnt have the money at the time to repair or replace it so the engine came out and was replaced with a 1700. Following this the TDR kit was removed from the 1500 and the engine found its way into a camper conversion. Since then (1995?) the parts have sat in a box in the workshop... Until today!

What is present :

- exhaust manifold
- turbo (with damaged rotor on the inlet shown above)
- turbo support bracket (mounts on end of cylinder head)
- exhaust manifold
- inlet manifold
- modified carb
- custom TDR intake
- custom TDR mount for standard airbox
- remote oil filter takeoff / pipes etc (turbo sits in approx location of oil filter)
- valve block and vacuum pipes
- Micro Dynamics ECU
- other electronic box
- intercooler (not great condition but shows size and location)

What is missing :
- paperwork / instructions / wiring diagram.
- 'loom' : there wasnt much of a loom but some wiring from ECU, its only 7 wires.
- silicone hoses to connect inlet to intercooler and on to engine. The were robbed for another project a while ago.
- standard air box : the car was fitted with a standard airbox, just relocated.
- engine (obviously!)

As I'm having a massive clearout currently this really needs to go. Could make the basis for an interesting project for somebody. Open to offers.

£ Offers.

Very similar to the set up on James' car (junior).

If James isn't planning to use the turbo then perhaps enough kit to make one good set up.

Kev, I really am open to offers...

I suppose the chances of somebody wanting it who has a really good set of S1 Ti seats and a good bonnet to swap are pretty small!

Hi. Yes a quite similar set up though where the turbo sits appears rather high up.

Be interested in knowing where the exhaust exited.

I am glad your selling it now as two years ago I would have bought myself even more complexity.

Not that it is overly complex, its just how much it is above my ability.

I may have a spare turbo of that era !! No knowledge of how good it is though.

Thats a good point actually, the turbo downpipe is missing. It mated to the standard system. Its probably in the workshop somewhere. I will have a dig!

The position wasn't so high, above the cam box. I figured it was for the oil to drain out of the turbo?

I many have an old fashioned photo of it in my sud somewhere.

Ah, you know me too well!

IHI turbo shared with Fezzas from the era (288 GTO and F40 I think), so can probably get spares. My only concern would be locating the turbo in my chassis, which sort of wraps around the oil filter, so probably not enough space for the turbo. Otherwise it would be ideal.

Alas, too bogged down trying to get the Green Machine back on the road in normally aspirated form to think about a major engineering project like this. But very interesting nonetheless.

I may be wrong, but I think my Mk1 Fiat Uno used an IHI turbo. 1.3 litre 1989.

Does anyone know what would the electronics be doing in this turbo set up.

Retarding the ignition to give control of the burning process ? :?

Very interesting anyhow.

Does this help?

The value in the left of the photo has an electrical connector. I think this controlled the boost.

It is boost related ignition timing control i believe.

As the boost increases it is read by a pressure sensor in the manifold, todays "map", and informs the box to meet this with adequate timing advance over and above the original dizzy capabilities,

I think! :D

Thanks chaps that clears up what it does rather well.

I shall have another look at some of the bits I have with a different view now.
