Engine for sale - 30550

Post by PETROLHEAD »

Here i have a complete Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint or 33, 30550 1712cc engine for sale.

I believe this was originally from one of the last Sprints, but will fit Suds and 33 just the same.

It was part of a haul i got from a clearout, and has been in their dry storage for quite some time.

Although unused for a long time, i can confirm that the crank, pistons, cams etc are freely moving and not seized by cranking kit over by hand

As with any stood engine, a refresh or rebuild would be best, and i dont know anymore about it than I've already said.

Open to offers, swaps or suggestions? I have it on fleabay for £249 ono, but as members don't be shy to ask for a discount! :D

Needs to find a good home as I'll never use it myself.

Hi Shrew,

I am hoping for 170bhp within the CTCRC rules for a Sprint.

That is a great question Tim.

I would be very interested in your view.

My view is the Alfasud Type 901 was marketed prior to 1st Jan 1983 and you can use any engine fitted to a Type 901 car. The best is the 1490cc 8v engine with 2 twin choke carbs over bored by a max of 1.651mm taking the engine to 1549cc.
Likewise the Alfasud Sprint Type 902 was marketed prior to 1st Jan 1983 and you can use any engine fitted to a Type 902 car. That is the 1712cc 8v engine with two twin choke carbs over bored by a max of 1.651mm taking the engine to 1778cc.

Personally, I would like to see the rules relaxed a little to allow more varied cars and some competition for the Escorts and Dolomites. It doesn't bother me if Sud is 2 litre as long as its in the right capacity class. Also, it doesn't bother me if a different crank is fitted to shorten or increase the stroke as long as its in the right capacity class.

Here is an example for you to consider. My Golf GTI has standard K-Jet fuel injection and the rules say it has to stay that way so 170bhp is the max. If I put two twin choke carbs on it I can get 200bhp. A step to far? It sounds like it but what is the alternative if you want to compete with a 240bhp Escort? We all buy Escort MK1s or Dolomite Sprints? The CTCRC would be very boring.

I understood it while manufacturers were competing but those days are gone. I think the classes should be based on power to weight ratio as long as the essence of the saloon cars is maintained.

All the best,
Simon

isn't the series that tim races in based on a power to rate class structure?

nice to see the engine going to good use mate ;)
Giulietta JTD 170
Lancia Delta integrale
Lancia Flavia coupe 1.8 1963
Lancia Dedra turbo
Maserati 3200GT

I'm bad with people things
But I should have tried more

Simon - interesting for the 1700 cc 8v Sprint, I didn't know it was made before 1st Jan 1983. I always thought it was 84/85 similar to the series two 33, perhaps that's just the uk?

I think an answer for the ctcrc is more cars in the up to 1600 class. A 1500 sud full monty should be as good as any 1600 ford or similar.

I think you could spend an eye watering amount and still not be as quick as the primett escort (beat the v12 jag at cadwell) or the Osborne Dolomite based on the fact they are driven on the absolute limit.

If the invitation class is your destination then just go for the most powerful you can, depends if you want to score points.

The golf is interesting. I'd suggest with 170bhp, more drivable perhaps on injection than carbs, and the cash you would have spent on the extra 30bhp to get to 200 on carbs going towards Big brakes and a top notch suspension set up instead, plus losing some wieght.....well that sounds like a pretty good piece of kit. The golf would out corner the other stuff with 200bhp if done right/well. Except primett and Osborne as they are quick drivers full stop.

At cadwell, I kept in front of the 3 litre Capri and crawled all over the v8 rover in corners, the fun part was passing him.....all with 140bhp. Yes it would have been nice to have had enough power to pass the rover earlier, but it was exciting taking him into the mountain....on the outside!

If you come to sell one of your cars, it could be more valuable if it fits into the rules and class structure, rather than just invitation. If grids ever get full again, clubs might tighten up on what can enter. About 6 or 7 years ago I contacted the ctcrc to see if I could run my 1979 sud fitted with a 130bhp 1700 8v in pre 83, I was given a curt answer of 'no' and the only place They would allow me to enter it was in classic thunder as I didn't have an original pre 83 engine  . Of course that was before the last recession , before grids dwindled and before they needed an invitation class to keep the grids and finances at a sustainable level. I suspect invitation classes are here to stay, but you never know.

Hi Tim,

You may have a point as the 1.7 8v engine was fitted to the Model 902 Sprint in 1987.

It was still a Model 902 Sprint though and the Model 902 Sprint was marketed before Jan 1st 1983.

I have asked the CTCRC.

I see your point, the words 'model' and 'marketed' are not clear. In the case of my sud, a 1700 was never offered so that was ruled out.

Share the ctcrc answer with us all, be interesting if 'model' equals the variant such as 902, or model equals 'sprint veloce' or 'green cloverleaf' etc.

If the former then a full monty 1700 8v is on the cards for you. :D

I'm hoping to be at some of the ctcrc meetings in 2016, especially cadwell and donington.

Hi Shrew,

Just checked the book:

A type 30550 motor is from a Sprint 1.7 QV.

You will need to select the pic above to read the entry on the right hand side.
