164 Cloverleaf Makeover

Post by Lightfoot »

Good afternoon, Gents!

Apologies for the absence (it's been a while) but something to post at last. Finally got around to giving my 164 Cloverleaf a bit of a facelift/botox/plastic surgery (whatever these Italian mistresses call it when their ageing process becomes too distressing for them to go out/look in a mirror!).

After 24 years' worth of blemishes, minor scratches, dents and abrasions (plus the odd rusty wheelarch!) had accumulated over the course of a fully professional working life, I just couldn't ignore her ravished 'visage' any longer.

Upon recommendation, I took the 'Leaf down to John Castleman who owns and runs JC Auto Finishers at Cranleigh in Surrey. John is originally (and still is really) a specialist in classic american cars but since visiting his 'rural retreat' a few times I've never ceased to be amazed at what passes through his hands.

John's a big, straight-talking guy and will advise, counsel etc, but ultimately he'll do exactly what you ask him to - no more, no less - so you are always in control of your project.

We went over the 164 and I explained what I wanted:

Dents in the bonnet, N/S/R quarter and rear panel, recovery of the O/S/R/ wheelarch and fuel filler flap, two or three rust holes in the boot floor - including a bad one in the R/H well caused by the perforated wheelarch - re-conditioning of the electric folding door mirrors (they and their mountings had really deteriorated) plus a re-finishing of front and rear bumpers as well as those delightful '80's sideskirts.

The 'Leaf was down there for approx seven weeks and I made several visits to a) keep abreast of the progress and b) to take ongoing photographs for the car's history.

Hopefully, I can upload a few here of the story: ok, here goes...
