164 aircon panel

Post by taffioch »

The Mk2 164 has, or had when it left the factory, a digital (sort-of) control panel for air conditioning and for a number of secondary electrical services, like foglamps, hazard warning lights etc. Unfortunately, the whole panel is uncharacteristically failure-prone, considering it was made by Bosch. The first casualty is normally bits of the digital display, but after that, even basic switch functions may give up. I've had one of these panels rebuilt in the USA through Alfissimo, where aircraft standard components were used, and it's still working perfectly after two and a bit years. Years ago, I had one rebuilt in the UK, but it didn't last a year. Now, Alfissimo's man has lost his workshop, so (getting to the point at last) does anyone know a likely repairer in the UK?

There is a person who does this via the dutch alfa 164 register but no I don't know off anyone in the UK. the guy on the dutch site will do it and charges about £100 exchange. I think what the main issue is with the unit that the multi strap cabling is of poor quality and gives internal power issues this is what this chap concentrates on.

Think I have one of these, I bought it at an Alfa day but then didn't need it. Could you possibly send a picture so I can be sure it's the correct one?

Well, it's a long story. I've had several of them, and they tend to degrade the switch functions, if they're really bad. The two I've been using and trying to get fixed are fine on the switches, but rubbish on the display. So everything works, but you just have to set the aircon by what the air temp feels like. No big deal, but it looks bad....

As said before there is a guy on the alfa164register.nl Who does them exchange about £100 or so inluding the postage he replaces the multi cable that supplies the display and checks them over He really seems to know what he's doing. He swpeaks english so no problems there . Might be worth giving him a try or ask a few questions .
Keep wanting to do mine too but every time I get some money together somthing more Important needs doing :o

I'm very interested in reaching the Dutchman, if only because work takes me to Amsterdam fairly frequently, and I need a good panel. So if you can dig out an address, it would be really helpful.

Hi all,

Just registered to this nice forum to let you know that I'm the guy/chap in Holland that does the repairs of those faulty Bosch units. ;)
I also sell complete, already refurbished, units... for Left- and Right hand drive cars (yes, there is a minor difference in them).

If you are interested please let me know.

Kind regards... Davy

And a fantastic service it is too.

The couriers tyre tracks had barely faded in the drive collecting my dodgy panel for Davy, before an email update from the magician himself and the speedy return of a now excellent panel.

Top notch, and for first time i can see why my feet are boiling! Lol!

It is indeed mate, very awesome!

Porto's services have now been added to the trader directory as an official CAF recognised and recommended stockist / repairer / restorer of these niggly parts and issues.

My own repaired control panel will now be displayed for viewing in a slightly alternative thread so as not to confuse the repair with my own modifications.

Many thanks Porto, another tick on the list of 164 things to do! :D
