They used to be £70 plus from Mangos when TS cars were abundant.

So, I cleaned mine up with thinners and sanded the tip.

........or am I getting mixed up.....is there a glass face?

They’re just a black plastic these days Dave. I Can’t remember seeing one with a glass face ?? Other types are encased in a SS body but the basic function is the same 33s pick up on a ring on the flywheel so they can get a bit grubby but as previously mentioned the 16v TS sensor is installed in the block so the sensing face is protected from the outside world
I seem to remember the 8v TS having a SS bodied unit that picked up on the front crank pulley This maybe what your thinking off

I keep one in the boot of my 147 just in case

I agree Craig. The good SH one I’m taking out will go in the boot as a “get me home spare” along with the old Serpentine belt as it will get me out of trouble if needed .

Has anyone else had a problem with Excessively noisy timing belts on twin sparks. ? It’s a new belt (Gates Powergrip) new tensioner and idler and all timed and tensioned up as per the book.
I’ve fitted hundreds of these in the past with no problems but this one just seems a little more Whiney but only when it gets hot. I’ve currently got the cover off but all belts on to observe the situation and when starts whining the tensioner is still in the correct running position.

Water pump noise?

Tbh Dave Doesn’t sound water pumpy. it’s just a slightly louder belt whine but certainly the temp aspect of the problem would stack with possible WP(that said it’s not actually very old) and felt fine when I turned it whilst fitting the belt

Update. I’m running the engine up to temp a few times a day and so far everything seems to be settling down I’ve currently got the cover off but all belts fitted so it’s all proper. If the current sound level continues I’ll then refit the cover and call it good. Im hoping it’s just the new belt settling in but I’ve not had one do this before .

Update to the update. I’ve now run the car up to temp (till fan cuts in) about 10 times and it’s all starting to settle down nicely. Temp is rock solid and the Belt whine is now negligible. I think its just a case of the new belt running in a slightly different area of the pulleys to the last belt.
Anyway I’ve decided to put all covers back on and put it to bed for the time being at least.
So next week I’ll fir the O/S arch liner, wheels and any other small bits of trim. Then I’ll finally get to run it round the block for the first time .

I've had that atime or two with new belts Lou, they sound a bit whirry and whiny despite being set right. Maybe it's just the shine coming off them?
Glad it seems to be all set now

First test drive of the spider today (very brief about 500yds) to the end of the street and back . All seems fine and I can’t wait to start putting some proper miles on it .

Spider now fully legal. Taxed and insured. Took it for an initial run round the block (10mls) all seem well with the engine running nicely. Belts still a little more whiney than id like so I’ll get hit back in the garage after Christmas (I’m still happy it’s not a tension issue) and remove the belt to inspect all pulleys inc case there’s any “yogi’s” on any pulleys that could be causing a problem with the belt seating (unlikely) a few small niggles to deal with like the drivers door doesn’t open from inside(probably the cable off) and the drivers door rattles a lot which could be connected to the aforementioned failure to open but generally speaking we’re very happy with it .

Took the Spider for a Proper road test today. All the way to Stafford and back via the scenic back roads. Done a total of about 50 miles now. We’ve Still got a few niggly rattles to sort and we’re making a list of small thing we’d like to repair or replace to make it as good as possible I think this is going to be a keeper. (Aren’t they all !!!)

Thanks Keith. It dawned on me the other day that this is the first time I’ve had an Alfa “road car” since my black 164 3.0 lusso back in 2003 . I’ve missed it .

That would be nice. I’ve even bought some rear Konis l and a full set of new springs for it. I’ve also dug out the leather seats I had in the attic. Along with the doors cards. So a full leather interior is planned n the next few weeks as soon as the weather cheers up

Oh yeah I’ve fixed the door opening issue but still got a rattle in the drivers door. As I ’ll be taking the panel back off again to swap for the new leathered ones so I’ll have a look then

Found the cause of cam belt whine !! (I suspected this may be the reason)
Belt was sat too far back on the cam pulleys so whilst it was timed and tensioned correctly the belt was actually running slightly askew from the crank up to the cams so the angle of attack of the belt teeth was not square to the pulley teeth hence whiney belt syndrome . Normally I’d expect the belt to “self centre” once the engine starts but in this case it obviously didn’t. All reset now and a big improvement in belt sound level.

I know the pics probably don't do the colour justice Lou but what code is that red - looks similar to my "Tomato Sauce" Mito?

Daft question, but how do you reset a belt on the pulleys?
As you say, you would think it would set itself after running for a bit.

All I did Dave was to time the engine up as if I was changing the belt. Then slacken the tensioner and just slide the belt back inline with the old marks left by the old belt. Then reset the tensioner and bobs your uncle .
