Alfa 33 S4 at Ipswich docks

Post by Bluesuit »

I was collecting some shock absorbers for my GTV from a courier based at the docks in Ipswich last week, inside the warehouse, the owner has a collection of Alfas stored including a red 33 S4 hatch, 3 GTVs (916 - sorry), a 155 and apparently some spiders too

Johnboy,

They were a major, perhaps defining feature of my younger life and I still feel passionate about them, but my comfort zone is mechanical issues, and as you guys illustrate, you have to have master bodywork and paint specialist skills or deep pockets to own and sustain a Sud these days, neither of which is me. Hence my admiration for your achievements.

In the 13 years I owned my S3 Sud I spent at least £7500 (1980s/1990s money) on bodywork (at least 2 major rebuilds and re sprays fighting the rust, and one major engine rebuild (BLS)) my S2 rebuild cost me £2500 at the time, mostly on bodywork, I did all the mechanical stuff myself. These days, with our wonderful government finding new ways to rip the tax-payer off (don't get me going on university tuition fees - 1 daughter at uni, another going this year) I don't have the disposable income for boxer ownership, hence my focus on the newer, cheaper non dissolving Alfa models which tend to have plenty of mechanical challenges to keep me amused. But reading about you guys efforts to keep suds, sprints and 33s on the road reminds me of my time, BC (before children) when I had time and money to do such stuff. But if I win the lottery, then I'll probably get one

agreed!

plus, if you ever need full clutch kits and dmf, wishbone sets, etc etc for your modern alfa's, you'd wisjh you had the simplicity and prices a sud/33 then!

I think personally, buy the right car initially, get it solid as, and then they're dirt cheap to live with.

Especially mine and johns, not cost us a penny in years!

Thanks Mr T!

The prospect of all that bodywork and cost brings me out in a cold sweat!

My 916 will keep me occupied for a year (or two if the budget remains tight), so it'll just be boxer spectating, watching the progress you guys make, sadly I'll have to record my tinkering in another place....
