Vehicle of Historic interest

My Sud was first registered on 01/02/1980. Which is 40 years ago.

And the road tax is due now.

Called into the Post office.....they say it must be registered before 01/01/1979 to qualify for VHI.

Or, is need to find the date it was actually built!

Anyone know where these records are kept?

Dave, try getting in touch with DVLA . Get the car re-registered with them as a Historic on the log book. You should get a replacement V5 in your name and then it is recognised as Historic.
I think that is the way to go.
Hopefully, someone can back me up on this as I think the tax exemption carries over each year.
Good luck.

Dave. I’ve just checked with my tech spec book and as I suspected there’s nothing in the chassis no that denotes the yr the car was made. The only thing you can do is roughly work back from the date of first registration. Alfa’s archive in Milan May be able to help with dates that certain ranges of chassis numbers were produced I’ve got a copy of Fussi that I can have a quick look through to see if that sheds any light on the subject. I’d say a car registered in Feb 80 was probably built mid to late 79 (6 months max) That said some cars could hang around longer if it wasn’t a popular colour or spec.
As dealers if we had a new car in stock for a full year that’d of been a problem. It’s a bit different nowadays with the industry suffering from an Oversupply leading to thousands of cars being parked in fields and forgotten about

Keith,
The PO tried to re register the car as historic, but it wasn't possible.
I rang the DVLA this morning.
They said it carries over each April as you say.......so will carry over to registered before 01/01/80......still no good to me.

They told me I need to find out the date of manufacture

When I needed to know the colour code of my Sud Marco Fazio replied by email the same day with loads of info including date of manufacture. Goodness knows how long it would take through Centro Documentazione nowadays?

I thought fusi would be a long shot but the sud is too late to have production numbers /yrs listed.

Looks like you’ll have to try Milan

Thanks Ted for the info.....seems my car was built during 1979.

Thanks also Lou, I've emailed Milan.

But it seems I'll have to pay 12m road tax this year,
and 6m next year before the car becomes a VHI

Milan sent me a form to fill in, which I returned straight away, over a week ago.

No reply yet. They're probably on strike......or on something else!
