I'd do a poll but I don't know how!

Post by STEVE5M »

I'm probably not alone in saying that on a very regular basis I nip onto Ebay/carsandclassics/autotrader etc looking for a bargain Sud. Usually it's a complete waste of time but this month they seem to be everywhere!

So, what do the boys and girls of CAF think......

Seasonal norm or the direct result of rising prices?
Had: 1974 Alfasud 5M, 1989 Alfasud Sprint 1.5QV,
Got: 1986 Alfetta GTV6
Want: Alfasud 5M, S1 Alfasud1.2 or 1.3Ti

I know what you mean Steve, Suds seemed so hard to find in the last ten years but this year there have been plenty pop up for sale and actually sold. I think the fact that Sud values have rocketed has motivated people to restore their cars and even sell them..

Yes I think your both right, with prices going up many people who have had an Alfasud for a few years and paid a lot less than they could maybe get now are likely to sell it (especially if the missus hears about its much higher value!!) :) we all know these cars have been undervalued and still are I think......... .......Which is more fun to own and drive?......... an Alfasud (flat 4, best handling small car ever, discs all round, low numbers surviving) or a mk2 Ford Escort 1600 sport (a mint one now fetching about 15k with a ohv engine, rear cart springs & rear drum brakes, basically a popular plus with go faster stripes and striped seats and rev counter)?! :? ...... So I guess it will mean quite a few cars changing owners in the next few years

there must have been quite a few owners who have been sitting on them as a very cheap classic motor, now the values are rising then they see an oportunity to cash in on them.
trouble is what they are able to "upgrade" to has also gone up in value.....apart from the new kitchen that the mrs may have had her eye on :D

what was the poll question  :)
Giulietta JTD 170
Lancia Delta integrale
Lancia Flavia coupe 1.8 1963
Lancia Dedra turbo
Renault Clio 197 RS

I'm bad with people things
But I should have tried more

That was the "Seasonal norm or the direct result of rising prices?" but that particular train has left the station! Let's raise the stakes. New poll/questionnaire.

- If prices continued to rise..........would you sell?
- Assuming the Mrs doesn't want the kitchen.......what would you replace the sud with?

Me? Sell Sprint, find S1 5M in good condition

How about everyone else?

I've always fancied a Porsche 911 but whilst my Sud Ti may have gone up in value so have 911's. I found a white 1988 Carrera in white with a rotten floor and sills for 15k. Like Kev says, it is difficult to 'trade up'

Nope................. the silver ti green cloverleaf will restored and used on nice days. The black ti green cloverleaf will get welded and resprayed then used. The black/white ti will get restored repaint white fitted with 1.7, poly bushed suspension then driven hard and as a track toy

I would love a 911 myself but I'll admit it - I'd be scared witless at the thought of a 5k engine repair. Ouch!

An Alfasud is more fun to drive than a 911 anyday and everyday, I had a 964 some years ago (last of the aircooled 911's), they look nice and sound nice but they are boring as hell to drive (honestly), very german as you would expect, everything feels tight and precise but to much so, no fun and scary as hell if driven even moderately quickly in the wet, too light at the front and prone to aquaplaning and the rear end will break away easily, I can remember a few times leaving motorways/dual carriageways in the wet and finding the slip road bending and tightening along with the arse cheeks  ............Keep the Sud mate

May well sell one of mine to help fund a mk1 mini cooper in the next few years :)

Got some serious saving to do yet though haha

If I had space and the cash then I'd add this to the collection

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C544417

It's nice to see that some good ones still exist, including non ti models. The silver gold clover leaf looks very nice.

It would have to be a series 1 ti for me also if on the road, I used to prefer white but the mustard yellow and salmon orange have taken over as preferred colours.

As someone else said, looking forward to seeing a bunch of s1 ti's all together in the near future.
