A worthwhile mod, IMHO

Post by StescoG66 »

No doubt been covered before, however swapped the dash light bulbs over to these. Difference is vast and to my mind well worthwhile. Dimmer not compatible but mine was like an on/off switch anyway so no biggie really......

My Vehicle Wiring Products catalogue says 12V LED bulbs are for "Off road use only"

I wondered why this was the case?

Done the rear lights in LED now too.looksfar better. Did it mainly to reduce the load on ageing wiring.

The LED emission source is in a different position to a standard filament lamp, so won't be at the prime focus of the reflector and lens. This is particularly true of "cob" style LED clusters. However, you can buy various aftermarket rear lights (and headlights too, for some vehicles) which are specifically designed to use LEDs and are fully "E" marked for road use.

The off-road stipulation doesn't apply to LEDs used in dashboard lighting.

I've been sent a link on another forum for LED headlight replacement bulbs for classic cars...

https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/

...Who sell a range of CE and RoHs approved LED replacements. Apparently the MoT rules were updated last year to allow LED conversions if they satisfied the standard beam pattern requirements.

Could be worth checking out, IF your reflectors are in good condition...
