More windscreens

Post by chriswilliams »

I am heading towards a re-spray and it is time to get the windscreen and rear window out.
I want to be VERY careful, and cutting out the rubber has been recommended.
But,
If I cut the rubbers I will need new ones!

Does anybody know where I can get new S3 rubbers (front and back), or a better or safer way of dealing with the problem?

Thanks,

Chris.

Easy to get out without damaging, just requires patience.
Start at the top inside the car, fold over an inch or so of the seal towards the 'screen, to reveal the metal lip of the car if you see what I mean. When it grips you just work your way along folding the rubber as you go, every so often when you've got a few inches peeled squeeze it up and it'll stay put. Work your way along the top and round both corners, once you get down both sides it'll lift out.

Been doing it that way for years, touch wood not broken one yet...

Here you go, this guy uses the same method.
Trick is to keep the screwdriver pretty much parallel to the glass, the tip grips the rubber and pulls it under, that way you're less likely to slip and stab the 'screen

There are some good instructions on here somewhere from Loo on how to remove windscreens, that work well, with little chance of disaster, - don't cut the rubber !

So, lets go the whole hog and talk about installation.

I know the trick with a cord pulled from the inside to get the rubber seal into place.

But, do people add silicone sealant at any time?
Is there a lubricant that will help?

Thanks,

Chris.

I fitted the rubber on the screen first, using silicone spray.
Then put a smear of grease all round the metal lip in and out.
Started from the bottom middle and worked round with 2 of us.

I was told not to use Fairy Liquid as lubricant, as it has salt in it, and can cause corrosion.
The grease stays there to stop corrosion.

A smear of waxoyl type substance is useful as it lubricates the seal to help it slip back into place and any remaining residue under the seal is a bonus!
I'd avoid using the silicon sealant that comes in a tube, it just goes everywhere and makes a right mess. The spray is a good lube
