Sprint engine questions

Post by Sprint67 »

Hi,

A few questions about Sprint engine.

Is it possible to change fly wheele from one engine to another or are they balanced differently?.

Also can I change Bosch distributor and coil with Magneti Marelli?.

In general can bits be interchanged from one engine to another.

Help please.

Cathal. 🤔

Hi Cathal. Yes no problem most parts are interchangable. For instance you can replace a Bosch dizzy with a Marelli system. The big exception to this rule is the Engine block main bearing caps They shouldn’t be swapped unless your going to reline bore the journals (to be avoided) and Conrod and BE caps. As for flywheels all flywheels are balanced to a certain spec as a unit . So it isn’t normally a problem to swap from engine to engine. Of course on a race engine we tend to balance all rotating parts some tuners treat it as one assembly (should then be Kept as such) and others do individual Components. You can usually interchange bits balanced in this way.

Hope this helps

Hi Lou,

Thank you for your quick response.

I got an engine from John at justsuds which had a Bosch dizzy on it and on my Sprint there is a Marelli system which I didn't want to change.
With regards to fly wheele it seem to be different on the engine from John to the one on the engine I want to swap from. With cupped holes on the face of it in different areas and not the same spacing. So was unsure that I could swap it over as a result.

Thanks again.

Cathal. 🙂

Hi Cathal
They look completely normal 8v items The fuel injected and 16v engine flywheels were a lot different as they have a phonic ring (looks a bit like 2 ring gears). This is for the TDC pick up / sender. You can fit them to a non IE engine but as The Ring gear is in a different plane you need to space the starter out about an inch an half ish.
Hope Thai info helps

Hi Lou,

Thanks for your reply and update in this matter.
I understand what your saying about the fuel injected and 16v versions also.
Once again thanks for your help.
