Steering Rack

Post by alfadave »

Been a silly boy today.

There was a small amount of welding needed to the bulkhead floor on my car, near the servo.

The guy must have plated up the drain hole.

Water was gathering, so I drilled a new hole.......the drill bit damaged the plastic tapered end cap on the steering rack!

Are these a removable item...and can I get one?

Dave is it the long “black Dick” one in the RH side (sticks through the inner wing). They come off quite easily just give it good tug and wiggle. I’d Just take it off and plug the hole with some decent goop

Lou,
Yes you are correct regarding the LBD!

But I need to replace it somehow?

Plugging the hole, I don't think is the answer?

It's just a dust cover that keeps the rack clean as the toothed rack end comes out as you turn, it's not under any pressure or anything.
It does just pull off as Lou suggests, then you can either repair it using araldite or something similar. Or alternatively I'm sure jutsuds John would send you out a good used one.

They used to regularly fall off. I’ve got some NOS ones for the power assisted racks (they’re different from Non assisted). Seriously unless it’s a BFO crack or it’s shattered into gazzilion bits covering a small hole externally will be fine the rack doesn’t pressurise the LBD
And you just want to stop shoite and crap getting in. Failing that I’m sure John will have some

Sorry, didn't explain myself properly.
The drill bit hit it, and broke half of it off.

Looks a clean ish break.

So, if I can get the other half off, I may be able to repair it.

They are hard plastic Dave, so super glue and a wrapping of pvc electrical tape should be ok.
As Kev and Lou have said ,it is just an extended dirt cover for when the rack extends out.

There's one in the post today Dave, - unless you are coming over for a 33 heater !
Cheers, John.

Thanks John,

I bought a 33 heater from you some time back.

Had a look at fitting it, and declined!

I'll need to dig out the car coat, trilby, and driving gloves!

We had an Austin A35 years back. Got an original sales brochure at an autojumble.

There were 2 optional extras. A heater!!

Guess what the other was?

Ash tray is the correct answer!

It was a crappy tin thing screwed under the front shelf.......would have thought they could fit it as standard.

A friend used to get a lift years ago, every Mon/Fri to work away in Newcastle.

In an A35 with no heater.....car was well steamed up when they got there.

And they were well steamed up in the pubs the rest of the week!
