Gearbox

Got an annoying gearbox whine over 40 mph in 4th/5th....seems to be getting slowly worse

Any suggestions?

But not adding sawdust, or turning the radio up!

Apart from checking oil condition/level , and maybe replacing it plus an additive, it sounds like something is wearing out :(
Another box or repair may be needed.

I was going to say gearbox oil level as well - I remember my previous gearbox started whining audibly when I took too much oil out (I was trying to diagnose why my halfshaft seals kept weeping at the time). Topping up again stopped the noise.

Its full to the brim with oil.
Its a shame to have to bin it. as all gears change ok, and no synchro problems.

Could you get it stripped and checked?
If gears and synchro are good, I agree a shame to bin it. Good box parts are hard to find.

Spoke to Charlie Skinner at Cloverleaf Transmissions.
Noisy bearings he says.
Budget price £250 labour, plus £250 parts........Gulp!

Plus VAT.....double gulp.

I had mine completely rebuilt by Dave at Rusper’s about 5 years back and it was £750 all in.....but it’s been absolutely top since. That also included at least 3 synchros and one main bearing....so looks like your price quote is about right.

Comes down to the fact.....take a risk on another box (a lot of effort getting it in) or bite the bullet and get yours done properly and for good.

I went the latter option and overall, glad I did.

He did mine and its going great despite me giving it a lot of stick.

Plus my C3 just cost £600 for a DPF problem. Against that the gearbox looks cheap. :D

Will a gearbox from a 145/146 boxer fit a sud?

Dave As your car has 33 brakes it shouldn’t be a problem. you’ll have to swap the gear-lever remote as the 145/6 used a cable system you’ll also Have to swap the big centre mounting The 145/6 had mounts on the sides
However You may struggle with speedo drive as the later cars had a magnetic pick up Rather than a cable so unless you remove the output shaft and swap the drive gear you’ll have to adapt your speedo to read a pulse you maybe able to adapt a 33 Speedo head maybe.

By complete co incidence, I met a guy yesterday, who's Sprint has a 16v engine, and 145 gearbox.

And he's thinking of selling it soon.

told him to put it on here first!

I picked up a 145 boxer gearbox locally.
Problem is the selector rod that sticks out at the rear, is different from the Sud/33 type.

So, maybe I could fit the selector shaft from my noisy Sud gearbox?

Never been inside one of these gearboxes......has anyone been there?

The fact that the Haynes manual says you need 35 special tools to work on a 5 speed box has always put me off a bit!

Gearbox work is not to be taken lightly. But if you have a decent level of competence and a lot of courage it’s certainly possible to tackle. The main thing is to equipe yourself with as much technical knowledge as possible . The std Sud workshop manual is probably the best place to start. There are a few special tools needed but there shouldn’t be anything that can’t be improvised.
Take lots of pics and make your own notes as you strip it . I’ve currently got two in bits at the moment. But I have to confess they’ve been in bits for at least 8yrs. I just haven’t had the time to finish them. Ones almost complete and just needs the diff fitting the others a str8 cut dog box but I’m struggling with parts for that one.

Lou tells me that my gearbox is from a late 33, and not a 145 (it doesn't have the tapped holes for the 145 mountings)

So, it seems the gear change linkage must be different from the sud one, as the end of the selector rod is different

There is a retired mechanic near me, who calls in sometimes for a chat, and gives words of wisdom.

When I mentioned my whining sud gearbox, he asked if I had checked the front wheel bearings.

He reckoned bearing noise could travel via a driveshaft into the gearbox

And then i remembered there was an advisory on the MoT in Feb for a noisy NSF wheel bearing.

I jacked the car up, and can feel quite a lot of play on the NSF bearing, much more than the other side.

No noise though, when spinning the wheel.

Anyway, I'll be replacing the wheel bearing, before doing a gearbox swap!

Forgot to say,
I would like to replace the outer driveshaft nut (as the rotation of the shaft wants to loosen it)

But can't see them on Ebay

I've got late Sprint type driveshafts/outboard discs.

Just replaced the NSF wheel bearing, with a new one.

On a test run, there is still some whine there, but much less intrusive than before.

I'm putting the gearbox replacement on the back burner for a while!
