Bought an Alfasud today....

Post by alfasuddriver »

Started a new project today, an Alfasud Green Cloverleaf which has been stored since 2008. My first car once I passed my test was an Alfa 33 1.3s and it was great but I always wanted a Sud Green Cloverleaf so a few years later I tried to find one but it really was almost impossible. When I say impossible, there were some but they really were shot at. A few years later (ok many years later!) finding this one was a pleasant surprise... at first glance a frightening spectacle with the wings and lights off and fuel lines hanging down.

However, it's not so bad...a tiny amount of welding needed at the end of the sill where the front wing rests.. the first MOT issue. I've bought a new Bosch battery so tomorrow will be a case of checking fuel supply, ignition, oil supply (cranking the engine) and hopefully life from the engine!

Here's some pics...

Thanks, yes the wings came off for some minor repairs which were actually completed on one side but there's a really awkward spot on the other side where the sill, jacking point and pillar meet...I don't really want to take the door off since it fits so well for once!

Once I get it running I'll get it on the ramp and check out the floor and inner rear arches...hoping for the best, preparing for the worst!!!

Haha, the missus throwing Practical Classics, I hope it doesn't come to that...she SEEMS quite understanding at the moment...

Believe it or not I didn't get around to even fitting the battery as I decided to attack the grim job and do the welding. On the offside I had to take the strut out to get to the crusty bits! ...

That looks like a very nice sud you have there ,good luck with it.
P.s my sud had sat for over 12 years in a workshop and took a while to get going but once running my brother drove it back from doncaster to crawley west sussex.

Thanks Greencloverleaf Pat, I'll definitely try and fire her up tomorrow. The fuel tank is like new and the fuel lines seem ok so I put some petrol in. I've turned the engine by hand so it's not seized...so far so good...

be very careful of the rubber fuel lines under the bonnet, they perish quite quickly with modern unleaded with the ethanol content. a leak around the heads and onto the exhaust isn't the best!

Thanks Kev, I think there are a few dodgy lines under the bonnet that I'll have to scrutinise

Thanks, the interior is in amazing condition,I'm hoping the red clock works ok when I hook up the battery! It looks just like your photo but without the mud flaps which I wouldn't mind putting on the car if I can find some

Thanks, well I finished the minor welding yesterday and started aligning the wings so they could be bolted on. I'm hoping to start on firing her up today. I can see that a set of ht leads will have to go in the shopping list as they look old and unreliable....

The car's a good one alright. Used to be mine. Glad it's gone to a good home.
Here's some pictures of her before I took the wings off for the welding to commence (and before I ran out of money!)
Hope they inspire you to carry on Richard....

Well I spent another day on the Sud, fitted the wings and one side of lights. It now looks more like a Sud then something out of Mad Max!

I could resist no longer..hooked the Bosch up and cranked the engine..it sounded a bit wrong to begin with and the fuel didn't seem to arrive. I think it was a matter of getting oil to the metal bits because it started to sound less screechy if you will with time. After a fair bit of cranking the the fuel started to come through and it coughed and spluttered into life!! The garage was full of smoke, slightly flooded now doubt but it cleared. A slight fuel leak developed at the tank end so I replaced the return and out hose. Tomorrow the lights, bumper, sill covers, passenger seat go on.

Thanks for those pics Colin, really nice and inspiring. Yes, this car did belong to Phil Gotts, so I'm told.

So far so good...

I'll let him know at our AROC meet on Tuesday, he'll be pleased to hear it's still in good nick, my old one AGW 86Y is still around somewhere I believe, last seen in the Colchester area, anyone seen it lately?

Cheers. Ian
